C., APRIL 27, COUNCILS PROTEST VIRGIN ISLANDS BILL Proposed Changes in Government Not Favored by People, Says Resolution. Declaring the government or the people were not consulted in the mat- ter, the Colonial Councils of St Thomas and St. John and St. Croix have adopted a resolution urging the withdrawal by the United States Sen- ate of a resolution Introduced by Senator McLean, Republican, Connec- ticut, proposing a civil form of gov- ernment for the Virgin Islands. The West Indian Island councils 1924—PART 1. further stated that while they were not “unalterably opposed” to a change in government which would be more permanent and tend to an improve- ment in political and economic condi- tions, “nevertheless we are of the opinion that the bill is not based on a knowledge of local conditions and would not be conducive to the best interest and welfare of all the people of the Virgin Islands.” Calling attention to an act of the American Congress providing that the Danish laws in force when the islands were purchased by the United States in 1917 shall remain in efect and that the colonial councils shall be consulted before any laws relating to the islands are made, the councils’ resolution declared the present form of government should continue until “a change has been requested Which emanates from the people.” S T One scientist has figured out that the physical strength of the average woman in comparison with her weight s less than two-thirds that of the average man.
