As brilliant as any reception of the midwinter was that at the Neth- erlands legation last night, when, in answer to the invitations sent out by Mme. de Graeff, she and the minis- ter received several hundred guests invited in honor of their country- man, Dr. Mengelberg, famous in the world of music, and his charming wife, Mme. Mengelberg. It was the largest company vet entertained in the new legation and the reception floor, opened up in full, was stately and handsome. The minister stood with Mme. de Gracff and their guests of honor in yocelving, using the long drawing room, while the grand hall and ball- room were soon thronged with the company of distinguised persons. In the dining room, at the end of the srand hall, supper was served and Lowls of punch stood on the table in the hallway, where guests sat about and chatted and smoked. No particular scheme of decoration was carried out nor was one needed, there being simply vases and bowls of spring flowers on the tables and antels, while in the dining room on the tall mantelshelf was a prim row of pink sweetpeas in small vases. On the table from which the buffet supper was served stood a tall bas- ket of pink spring flowers. Mme. de Graeff wore for the even- ing a becoming gown of light blue crepe, with rhinestone trimmings and sleeves of blue lace. Mme.
