-BELL SYSTEM DENIES :, “MONOPOLY OF AIR” -' hjun;:ti.ol_:”l’roqeedings Dech.red Brought Only to Protect . Patent Rights. PUBLIC HELD BENEFITED Officiaf Explains “Action in New " “York Court. By the. Associnted Press. NEW-YORK, March 7.—The Ameri- can Telephone: and Telegraph Com- | fully half will be “heavy stuff,” such | Thomas Jefferson.” pany does not desire “a monopoly of the alr,” H. B. Thayer, its president, declared in commenting on the suit “brought by the corporation to re- straln station WHN from broadcast- ing A. T. & T. radlo programs. The action was only an attempt to pro- tect--patent rights controlled by the _complainant for. radlo broadcasting devices, Mr. Thayer said. Station WHN is operated here by Blarcus Loew and George Schubel. “When the public became interested ! in entertainment . by wireless tele- phonie” ‘broadcasting.” Mr. Thayer said, “the telephona company ar- ranged so that these Inventions could become available to the public by pur- chase of apparatus at reasonable prices. Attempt to Limit Stations. “When it appeared likely that a multitude of ' broadcasting stations would destroy the value of this enter- tainment, the t@lephone company es- tablisked & station and offered its fa- cilities for hire, with the hope and expectation that that arrangement Would do away with a large number of - stations interfering with each other, and thus |n\errermg with the enjoyment of the public. For the same reason it has re- fused to license other stations to operate for hire. s whole matter of entertain- ment of the public by wireless tele- phony is very new and regulations necessary for Its preservation have not been established, but have been under consideration h) the only body which can legally provide for their establishment, and that is the Con- &ress of the United States. Whenever Congress acts. we shall gladly ac- cept its regulations as relleving us from any obligation to protest the public. "We have no desire for a monpoly of the air. v Intringement Claimed. “Some of our patents which can Dbe used in broadcasting have been in- fringed, many times carelegsly and sometimes wantonly. We have offered to license the infringers at reason- able rates. “The courts have held that unless the owners of patents protect them- selves and prosecute infringements, the patents lapse: so that when | licenses are not accepted we must either prosecute infringers or ‘M «effect dedicate to the public valuable property.” . Weather Radio Service. Chile is planning to establish a broadcasting system to carry weather | and meterological reports to its farm- | ers. The plan is similar to that used by the United: States Department of Agriculture. Radio telephone methods will be employed, so that all may listen-in without mastering the na- tional code. NEW CHICAGO STATION WILL SERVE FARMERS | | Opens About April 1 and’ Will Be Veritable Radio University for Agriculture. Special Dispatch to The St | CHICAGO, March 7.—The nation's farmers will have a veritable radio university at thelr disposal when the great new Sears-Roebuck broadcast- ing station opens about April 1, ac- cording to plans announced by the company today. Ninety-five per cent of the prn- grams to be broadcast from the yet unnamed station, it was stated, will be designed especlally for rural con- sumption, and of this 95 per cent, us farmers might get if they had time to desert their acres and go to agricultural schools. The four main features of the pro- Erams as projected are: . A complete and detailed course in co-operative marketing, conducted by lecturers of the foremost universi- ties of the country. This caurse, it is claimed,” will be more comprehensive than the farmers could get in. any one university ‘in the world. 2. “The best agricultural story of Edgar L. Bill, director of the Illinois Agricultural 'Association, will have charge of this feature an: will obtain by wire from special cor- respondents in various sections of the country what he regands as the out- standing farm news of the day. The “best story” will be broadcast the same night it Is received. 3. A question and answer period, during which experts wil] answer any query the farmer in Seattle or Fort Worth may want to ask about crop conditions in Syracuse or San Fran- cisco, and vice versa. 4. Light entertainment. But even this will have a farm flavor. The bedtime story, for instance, .will be designed to catch the fancy of the boys and glrls down on the farm. U. . FIRM GETS OIL FIELD.
