28 MANY WEAK SPOTS IN MARKET TODAY, Inspiration Copper Drops as Do Some Rails—N. & W. Shares in Sharp Advance. | BY STUART P. WEST. Special Dispatcl to The Star. | NEW YORK, February 28.—The| leaders of the share list on the stock ange continued to stand up wel v despite the irregular movements stocks. Stecl commen, Baldwin Locomotive, Studebalker and American Can all had the behavior of stocks which were thoroughly liquidated during the re- cent reaction and in which @ short interest was doing its best Lo extricate itself from an uncomfortable position. Rallroad Shares Weak. Northwestern railway shares were weak obvious reasons. Northern came out with u January report showing a loss in gross as compared with the same month last year of $1,282.000, and a! net decrease of over $500,000, or 50 per cent. Considering that the road | did not earn its full 5 | dends in 1923, this 4 ! romising start for ¢ { he Great Northern figures were still worse in (he gross, which fell off 32,225,000, but the net decline was smaller, {t was $365,000 This ‘was not so bad unless th January condltions are perpetuated subsequent months, for Great orthern carned about $7 last Year 2gainst its $5 dividend distribution. Chicago and Northwestern was equal- 1y weak, and there was considerable selling of the St. Paul Virginia-Carolina Chemical dire tors met and adjourncd without mak- ing any announcement reg: rumors of a reorgani street continued to fe that some sort of a c justment was inevitable of { what appears to be a permanent loss in income. Also, despite denials, It is thought lkely that Virginia-Curo- lina will follow the example of Amercan Cotton Oil and divest itself of properties which during the last three vears have been a drag. | Big Day in Coppers. The expected happened in the case of the two copper companies which ¢ for dividend action todav. The Kennecott directors declured the re wlar quarterly cents, while the Inspiration directors passed the div- idend eltogether. The strong point in the Kennecott situation is its own- ersiip of the Braden property, which, like the others fn South Ameérica, i 2 low-cost producer and can make Plenty of money even at present pri Anaconda was heavily sold again_and made a new low, but on into powerful sup- i i this decline ran por Norfol atrong of Western gain. partly in dividends and par reports of an impending lea Penneylvania. Wall street w Ing out what Norfo would be worth as a guara stock coming ahead of Pennsyvlvania bonds and decided that, as such, it would have to sell on a § to 5% per cent basi Studebaker's 1823 Report. The 1923 report of the Studebaker Corpération is expected soon, and the street today had its mind set on ap- proximately §28 a share for the com- mon_stock. In the first nine months the balance available for the common was $23.63 a share. In his statement to stockholders some time ago Presi- dent Erskine sald that the business of the Studebaker Corporation for the fourth quarter of 1923 would be “slightly below that of the third quarter,” but that a substantial vol- ume would be assured. The figures in the annual report are of less interest generally than the pro- posal to issue two and a half shares of new common stock for every share of the present outstanding issue. ‘Westinghouse was etrong today, at- tracting further buying in anticipation of a favorable report for the fiscal year soon to end, and on account of the continued satisfactory condition of the company’s business. The ycar will prob- abiy result in net earnings of $10 a share on the common stock, Which would leave a good sized margin over carrent dividend requirements. The annual report i3 expected to make u favorable showing as regards unfilled crders. MARKET CLOSES STRONG. was very expectation on the and Washington Tax News Great Help to Market. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 28.—A vir- tual agreement on tax legislation be- tween regular republicans and “in- surgents” at Washington brought about & good rally in today's market. This tax news counteracted the de- pressing effect of the passing of the Inspiration Copper dividend and pub- lication of some poor January earn- ings' statements by northwestern roads. Sales approximated 850,000 ehares. The closing was strong. A sharp run-up in Norfolk & Western to a new 1924 high at 119% accelerated tho short covering movement. which sct in_during the afternoon, a num- ber of Standard shares advaucing 2 to 3 point. | FRANCS RESIST PRESSURE. Bpecisl Dispateh to The NEW YORK, February 28.—The gelling movement in French francs was not resumed, but such recovery s occurred was feeble. Dealers this morning reported that the enticipated drop in the price of ©ggs had been realized. Average re- ceipts were quoted at 28 cents, waile selected stock was quoted at 30 cents. The drop in prices, it is stated, is due to increased receipts. There has been mno decrease in prices in the poultry market the past fow days. The market on both chick- ens and turkeys was reported much firmer this morning, but no changes in meat prices were reported. Cold weather in Florida and the re- cent storm in the Norfolk, Va., sec- tion affected the green vegetable mar- ket. Weather conditions in both sec- tions have improved, however, and increased receipts are expected. Fancy fruits are being received from South Africa and South America and prices are high. CHICAGO, February 2 For tho leads, 9.508 third day in succession the corn mar- ket today overtopped previous high- price records of tho season. Today's new records were in the July and September deliveries, and were roach- ed as soon as business began. Sales. to realize profits led to a little re- action from the best figures, but de- mand continued active, based chiefly on prospeotive curtailment of re- ocelpts, After opening unchanged to half a cent higher, May, £2 to 82, the market kept neac the initial range. ‘Wheat and oats were firm in sym- pathy with corn. The wheat opening, which varied from a_shade lower 1o % cent advanced, May, 110K to 1.10%, and July, 1.10%, was followed by only slight changes during the Eariys trade: Oats started at % cent decline to %a% cent gain, May, 49% to 49%a 49%. Later fluctuations were nar- row. Provisions took their cue from the corn market rather than from hog values. WHEAT— Open. High.
