'The Magnificent Adventure A Stirring Story of the Northwest. BY EMERSON HOUGH. (Copyright, 1823, by (Continued from Yesterday's Star.) “Meriwether _Lewis, come hack! You have gone far enpugh. On ahead are only cruel hardship and continual failure. Here ave fortune, fame, wealth, ambition, honor—and more. 1 told you one time 1 would lay my hand upon your shoulder out yonds no matter where you were. 1 said that you should look into my face yonder when you sat alone beside Your fire under the stars. You said that it would be torment. T said that none the less T would not let you go. T said my face still should stay with You until you were willing to turn back. Turn back now, Meriwether Lewls! Come back!" The letter wis not signed and needed not to be. Meriwether Lewis sat staring at the paper clutehbed in his hand. Her fay Ah, did he not sea it now? Was It not true what she had sald? He saw lLer face now—but not smiling, happy, contented, as it once had been. No, he saw it pale and in distress. He saw tears in her eyes. And she had written him: “Oh, if only 1 had the right to lay some command on you A not he, who had Jionor, subject now to any that she might give him? “Will, Will!" exclaimed Meriwether Lewis sharply, imperatively, to his friend, whom he could see dimly at a | little distance as he lay. The long fizure in its robes straightened qu for by day or night Willlam Clark was instantl ready for any sudden alurm. He started up on his robe with his hand | on his rifle. “Who calls there? cried, half awake. 1t is I, Will" said Meriwether Lewis, advancing toward him. “Lis- ten! 11 me, Will, why did you do this?” Why did T do what? rong?" k was now on his feet, and Lewis held out the letter to him. He took it in his hand, looked at it won- deringly. “This letter—" began Meriwether Lewis. “Certainly you carried it for me. Why did you not bring it to me long ago “What letter? Whose letter is it, Merne? I never saw it before. What { 1s it you are saying? Are you mad?” “I think so,” said Lewis, “I think 1 must be. Here is a letter—I found | it but now in my bed. I thought perhaps you had had it for me a long forgotte: command 1 Iy, ¢ Who goes?” he Merne, what time and placed it there as a sur-|trace of the Indian village was left, | prise.” “Wh 1t say “It is from the woman whose face 1 have seen at night, Will. She asks me to come back.” “Burn it—throw it in the fire!” said William_Clark, sharply. “Go back? What, forsake Mr. Jefferson—leave me “God forgive me, Will, but you For one mo- | sends it, Merne? What does search my very heart! Taent Twas on the point of declaring myself too il to finish this journey— | on the point of letting you have all | the honor of it. I was going to sur- | render my place to you." “You cannot desert us, Merne! You shall not! Go back to bed! Give me the letter! Bah! it is some counter- | feit, some trick of one of tha men It would be worth any man's life to try a jest like that” said Meri- | , Wether Lewis. “It is no count 3 I know it too well. This letter was written before we left St. Louis. How ; it came here T know not, but I know | 0 wrote it “She had no right——" 1 “Ah, but that is the cruelty of it—| she did have the right!” i “There are Some thinzs which man must work out for himself,”" sa William Clark, slowly, after @ time. | “I don’t think T1l ask any questions If there is any place where I can take half vour burden, You know what 1 will do. We've worked s {3 and share alike, but perhaps some things cannot be shared, even by vou and me. 1t is for you to tell ms i 1 can help You now.” If not, then you must decide.” { | i | < beloved friend from him. M wether Lewis walked out alone ir the night. Stumbling, he passed o out among the shadows, undar the starligsht. Without much plan he found himself on a little eminence of the bluff near by, He sat down, his over his head, like an Indian, mo- tionless, thinking, fighting out his own fight, as sometimes a man must, alone. ~He did not know that Wil- liam Clark, most faithful 6T friend: himself silent as a Sioux, had fol- lowed, and sat a little distance apart, his eyes fixed on the motionless fig ure outlined against the sky. ‘The dawn came at last and kindle a red band along the east. The gray light at length grew more clear. A covote on the bluff raised a long and | quavering cry, like some soul in tor. ture. As if it were hix own voics Meriwether Lew back the blanket from his shoulders, and turned down the hill, . He saw his friend rising and ad- vancing to him. Once more their hands gripped, as they had when the two first met on the Ohio, almost a year ago, at the beginning of their journey. Lewis frowned heavily. not speak for a time. “Give the orders to roll out, Captain Clark length. “Which way, Captain Lewls — up- stream or down?" “The expedi Captain Clark.” “God bless you, red-headed one. CHAPTER 111 he Day's Work. “Roll out, men, roll out The sleeping men stirred under their robes and blankets and turned out, quickly awake, after the fashion of the wilderness. The sentinel came in, his moccasins wet, his tunic girded tight against the cool of the morning, which even at that season was chill upon the high plains. Soon the fires were alight and the odors of roasting meat arose. The hour was scarce yet dawn. 1 “Ordway! Gass! Pryor!” Lewis called In the sergeants in charge of the three messes. “The boy Shannon has not returned. Which of your men, Ordway, will best serve to find Shannon and meet us up the river?” “Myself, sir,” said Ordway, “if you please. s “No, ’tis meself, sor,” interrupted Patrick Gass. Pryor, with hand outstretched, also claimed the honor of the difficult un- dertaking. You three are needed in the boats," sald the leader. “No, I think it will be better to send Droulllard and the two Field boys. But tell me, Ser- geant Ordway:- “Yes, sir.” . “Has any boat passed up the ri within the last day—(or instance, while we were away at the hunt?” “I think not, sir. Surely any one coming up the river would have turned in at our camp. Lewis turned to Gass, to Pryor, but both agreed that no boat could have gone by unnoticed. “And no man has come into the camp from below—no horseman? They all shook their heads. Their leader looked from one to the other keenly, trying to see if anything was concealed from him, but the honest faces of his men showed no sus- piclon of his own doubt He dismissed them, feeling it be- neath his dignity to make inquiry as tu the bearer of the mysterious let- ter; nor did he mention it again to Wiillam Clark. He knew bnly that some ome of his men had a secret from his commander. _ “Ahe men will find Shannon and s turning blanket drawn He could he men to said he at on will go forward, Merne!" said the H {over the loss of Shannon. D. Appleton & Co.) to walt hereftor them. The water is falling now,” sald Clark. “We are doing_our twenty miles daily. The men laugh on the line, for the bars are exposed, and they can track along shoro easily. Suppose Shannon were out three days, that would make it sixty miles up-stream or less for him, for he could cut the bends. I make no doubt that when he found himself out for the night he started up the river, even before this time. En avant, Cuzatte!” he called. “You hall lead the line for the first draw. make it lively for an hour. Sing some sons, Cruzatte, if you can— some =ong of old Kaskaskia.” “Sure, the Frenchmans, she'll lead on the line this morning, capitaine! T'll put nine, seven Frenchmans on the line, and she’ll run on the bank on her bare feet two hour—one hour. This buffalo meat, she make French- strong ke nothing! enchy!” said Parick Cruzatte's sergeant, who stood “Walt until tine comes for quad on the line—'tis thin we'll make the elkhide hum! There's a few of the Irish along!” "Ho!" said Ordway, usually silent. ‘Wait rather for us Yankees—we'll show you what old Vermont can do!" “As to that,” sald Pryor, “belike the Ohio and Kentucky men could serve a turn as well as the Irish or the French. Old Kaintuck has to help out the others—the way she did in the French and Indian war.” “Well,” broke in Peter Joining them as they argued, “I am from Pennsylvania, but I am nalf Virginian, and there are some otners from the Old Dominion. When you are all done, call on us—ole Vir- ginny never tires.” The contagion of their light-heart- edness, their loyalty and devotion, came as solace to the heart of Meri- wether Lewis. He smiled in spite of himself, his eve kindling with confi- dence and admiration as he looked over his men. They were stripping for their da work, ready for mud or water or sun, as the case might be. Amidships, on the highest locker on the barge, one of the Kentuckians was flapping his arms lustily and giving the cockerow, the river challenge of frontier days. Others seated themselves at the dong sweeps of the barge, while yet others were manning the plrogues. A few moments later, with joyous shouts, they were on thelr way once more, and not setting their faces to- ward home. In an hour they were bove the first long bend. The wil- derness had closed behind them. No bring him llhnlwnfl—we can’t afford Welser, no sight of the lingering smoke of their last camp fires. Faithfully, patiently, day by day, they held their was, sussained’ by the renewed fascination of adventure, hardened and inured to risk and toil alike. The distance behind them lengthened so enormously that they began to figure upon the unknown her than the known. ‘We surely must be almost across now said some of the me; All of them were sore_distressed Two weeks had passed since they left the Yank- ton Sioux, and four times the faith- ful traflers had come back to the boats with no trace of the missing one. “It certainty in the now,” assented William ously one day as they lay in the noon encampment. “But perhaps he may be among the natives somewhere, and we may hear of him when wé come back—if ever we do." “If he got by the Teton Sioux and kept on up the river in time, find us somewhere #nong the Man- dans,” said Meriwether Lewis. “But we will try once more before we give him up. Send a man to the top of the bluft with my spyglass.” (Continued in Tomorrow's Star.) LONE BANDIT GETS $11,194 IN JEWELRY Binds and Gags Salesman in Hotel Room and Escapes With Loot. ff chance is v Clark seri- By the Associated Press, CLEVELAND, February 16.—Philip Wohl, New York diamond salesman, reported to police that he was bound and gagged in his room in a down- | town hotel yesterday and robbed by | a lone bandit of jewelry valued at §11,194, and he sald it was more than thrce hours before he was able to free himself and give an alarm. About three years ago Wohl reported (that he had been robbed of several | thousand dollars' worth of jewels in another downtown hotel, Wohl sald that when he opened his door to admit a supposed messen- ger he was confronted by a man with a revolver. The robber threw a towel over his head, bound his wrists behind his back and tled him to a bathroom doorknob. He was dis- covered by a maid who heard him kicking on the door. An organized gang of gem thieves, with Wefidquarters in Cleveland, is responsible for the robbery, police believe. Ten days ago Albert Gins- berg, a jewelry salesman 6f Albany, N. Y., réported the theft of $5,000 in diamonds from his hotel room, and vesterday Irving Leberman, jewelry calesman of Rochester, N. Y. was held up near Elyria, Ohio, and robbed of dinmonds valued at more than $50,000. DENIED PERMISSION T0 QUIZ COUNTESS Mme. Modica Loses Plea to Have Thaw's Sister Questioned in Alienation Suit.
