C. - = CONCENTRATE PRAYER|Metropolitan M. E. |NEW PASTOR TO GIVE lMISSlONARY SOCIETY FOR BETTER WORLD Many Churches Join Movement This Week in Petitions Along Similar Lines. HOMES ARE ALSO ENLISTED Possibilities of Appeal Declared to S Be Infinite. Joining with churches throughout the world thousands of American congregations will observe the period from January 6 to 12 as a week of united prayer. The call is being sent out by the commission on evangelism and life service of the Federal Council of Churches in co-operation with the world’s evangelical alllance. It is slgned by churchmen of many lands. During the week the churches will Join in sermons on the same text, the mame Bible readings and the same prayer topica. The program has been «carefully prepared by church leaders. Tn many cities, towns and smaller communities union services will be held. In addition, thousands of church members will join In the ob- marvance with prayers in thelr own Tomes. This week of united prayer, which was established some vears ago, has grown until fts observance is wide- mpread. Churches on every continent and {n most countries will join. Last Jear the observance in America was %o much greater than anticipated that second and third editions of the pro- &ram had to be issued. United Effort Urged. The call to praver says in part: “Before the new year takes for nations and churches a character of fts own, it is our privilege to in- ~iteall Christian people to fellow- ship in prayer. “It {8 not anded of us that we should devise a formal unity before ‘Wwe can come together at the throne of grace. There is a unity which is already ours. We are one body in Christ. We have not to create but to enter {nto the unity which comes from our common relationship, in grateful and adoring faith, to the one . We come by many ways to Him, but it is to Him that we all come, and in Him we meet with one another. We need not wait for other sanction. ‘TWe shall hope to see the needs, which we share, more clearly when we together bring them into the light of the one divine purpose. We know something of our shame and faflure. ‘We are men of unclean lips and we dwell in the midst of a peo- ple of unclean lips’ We shall know more when we have lifted this our world into the pura and holy light We know romething of our need of God, but we shall learn more in fel- Jowship; we shall see with cleansed vislon what it is that can fill human of a great purpose of an eternal Posaibilities of Prayer. “Everywhere we see men secking to fill their days with excitement in order to escape from thinking. In the fallure -of their merely formal religion thoy hope to fill the void with rew superstitions. They dream that they are eating, and they will awake 0 find their souls empty. This we know fn part, but when we strengthen each other in the fellowshlp of prayer and come with boldness to God, femow SUI1 more suren that nothing buot faith in the living God can satiafy tha soul of man. “But we shall not only see with purified eres: we shall open new ways through our offering of ourselves, whereby the spirit of God may enter into the human scene. There is a way open whenever a solitary soul +urns in falth to its Lord, but we have - the assurance of the Saviour Him- =elf that through fellowship the souls of men open another road. ‘Where two of three are gathered together tn My name, there am I in the midst of them. * * If two of you shall agree * ® * it shall be done. It will make a difference whether we unite in prayer or not. Such a fellowship In prayer means ways thrown open, powers released, rein- forcements of courage and hope for the faithful servants of God. “We cannot limit the range of be- Ueving prayer. the world has still to Jearn what may follow upon the fel- Jowship in_prayer of all the people i To the discovery of that| of God. mecret In experience we call the chuiches for their own sake, for the sake of the world and for the sake of Him who waits and has waited long for us to offer Him this road.” WILL UNDERGO OPERATION.
