T0 MAKE CONCRETE - | FLOORS DURABLE | Builder Says Wearing Quality May Be Increased by Solution He Prescribes. The wearing: qualities of a concrete floor may be Increased by treatment with some good floor hardener, a builder says. One treatment consists in the ap- plication ‘of about a 16 per cent solu- tion of zinc sulphate with about 4% per cent free sulphuric acid applied four ‘hours after the first one. Thet} surface should be scrubbed with hot water and mopped dry just before the application of the second coat. This “treatment gives the floor & darker appearance than the original concrete, There are a number of compounds axes, etc., which are te floor hardeners. Pulyerized iron mixed with sal am- monlac or some other oxidizing agent is also used both as an Integral floor hardener and as a treatment for a concrete floor surface. There are on the market a number of compounds which are widely rec- ommended for inclusion in the body of the concrete. Instructions for the use of these compounds invaria- bly call for many of the methods and practices which are known to be es- sential for successful concrete floors built with the inclusioni of Integral compounds. Poor workmanship or improper methods of materials can- not be compensated for by the ad- mixtura of any material other than thote used in making good concrete. Admixtures containing chemieals may interfere with the chemical ac- tion between the cement and the wa- ter. Unquestionable evidence should, therefore, be had about the effect on the concrete of any proposed admix- ture before it is specified for use. Decordtive floor paints or coatings may be had in considerable variety from responsible manufacturers. Al- most without exception these painta require that the floor be thoroughly clean and dry when the paint is ap- plied. A fairly wide range of colors is available and while these paints wear off under foot traffic, they are, in general. as permanent and wear- resistive as the paints wood floors. SAYS PLASTER SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY DRIED Interior Trim Put on While Is Is Wet Will Cause ‘Trouble, Mill- man, Says. Tt is common practice to install interior yrim before the plastering is dry, and'it has been noted in some instances that contractors even.go as far as to place it hefore fe plasier- ing work-is completed. If interfor windows are is thoroughly will unquestionably sarink and perhaps bacome molded or of moisture. A local millwork manufacturer contends that the factories have'a great deal of trouble on this account. Tn almost every instance he reports | and the smuall-house contractor puts up his interior trim just as soon as he is through plastering and before it has had time to dry out. - Naturally, it 1s going to cause the trim to syell or shrink. At all times the trim should have a shellac filler, ‘and should not be installed until “the plastering Is thoroughly dry. When factory work shrinks, the first complaint comes to the contrac- tor, who passes it on the millwork manufacturers. It 1s not-the fault of ! the manufacturer in this cnse. but { the fault of the contractor. If archi- tects would I[nsist upon the contrac- for keeping snsi doors in a dr trim - and plastering is thoroughly dry, storing _them in_the house plasterii would serve to greatly reduce the general cost of millwork and also | save considerable unnecessary trou- ble, delay, cost and annoyance. Never fit or hang windows and doors and don’'t put up the inside trim until the plastering is thor- oughly dry. s R REALTORS HAVE CHARGE OF COUNTY ADVERTISING Official recognition of the services of a real estate board in advertising the advantages of its community comes in a recent of the county commissioners of ouls. county, | Mimmesota, to turn to the Vir- zinla-Eveleth Real Estate Board the ded by the agent for the advancement of public interest in the agricuitural resources of the county.
