He had only one apeech, in which. he always zlorifled Patrick Henry, his own par- ticular hero among the many Vir- ginla has given. “Some of his friends, perhaps a little bored at the oft-repeated story which always wound up in ‘Give me liberty, or give me death!' put up a job on him one night when he was called upon, without previous notice, to speak on the subject of horse collc. “My friend was equal to the emer- gency. He arose and addressed the mudience about as follows: *“Gentlemen, this subject is one of much more importance than you be- lieve. It affects the cost of trans- portation, the reliability of communi- cation and it has a definite effect upon the cost of living. C., November 24— Corporations of North Carolina are not required to list stock in foreign | coroprations for local taxation, but | neither stock of this nature nor that {owned in building and loan associa- tions may be deducted in computing taxes due on “corporate excess.” ac- cording to a decision reached here by thte state board of assessment. The decision reverses that of a pre- vious informal decision. The previous interpretation of the matter was that foreign stock owned by corporations was not exempt at all, but the board {of assessment In its decision of to- day concluded that this constituted diserimination against the corpora- tions and that the phraseology of the statute relative to stock exemption should be construed to include both individuals and corporations. CHEMICALS DEPRESSED. Topheavy Stocks Continue to Hold Prices Down. NEW YORK, November 24.—Drug and Chemical Markets says: “‘Keen competition and generally topheavy stocks of chemicals continue to hold the market in a depressed state. Not only overproduction but excessively heavy imports of a number of chemi- cals bring a steady pressure on val- ues, although —prices have now reached a point where the slightest excuse brings strong resistance to further shading. “Another shortage of arsenlc is looked for this year, as demand for calcium argenate for boil weevil con- trol in the cotton belt is expected to be materially larger next year. Sodium prussiate, after a sharp de- cline resulting from a competitive fight between importers and domestic makers. has firmed up slightly. Bleaching powder at $1.25 is at the low voint for several years and well under cost to produce. —_—_— DRY GOODS STRONG. Upward Bound in Market as Week Closes.
