CHRISTIANS CALLED TO BE MISSIONARIES. — John, Matthew, 28.16-2 ; Golden Text: disciples of all Matthew, 28:19. the natlons.— | Missions had thelr beginnings in the heart of Jehovah. His love for the world found expression in mis- sionary efforts to save men. His nirit inspired the prophets, psalm- ists and the outstanding personal- ities of the Old Testament dispensa- tion whose lives, labor and lessons revealed to Isrmel God's missionary age. In the fulluess of time Jesus appeared among men as a misslonary commissfoned to save the world. He proclaimed the gospel of d's love for men and His longing to save by His evangelistic, medical jand educational missionary work | those who were lost. | Christ Jesus saved men so that He | {could fill them with His passion for the lost. A young girl about twelve yvears of age recently applied for {membership in my church. She was )nsk(«d if she knew what God wanted jher to make out of her life. He only records ! this one appearance to the apostles out of the number we know did oc- cur. Probably urrences | this was the gather- ing at which there were “more than 1500 brethren sent. There must have been something majestic about | His appearance that thrilied the mul- {titude who had assembled in_snccord- {ance with His appointment. They were filled with a spirit of reverence and worship. The sensation for som of them was s great that th | doubted. These could not have been the eleven, for they had been con- vinced of His resurrection fully a month previous. Doubt is not an im peachment of our faith. It is an as- sault upon it that must be repelled. There was something about HIs personality, power and presence that supported Iiis claim of the right to impose His will upon us. The Scriptures glve two reasons why all authority “in heaven and earth” be- longs to Christ. Ho is eternal Word that created all things. He 1S the only revealer of God. The only satlsfactory explanation of His char- acter Is that He Himself is God. “He was the Light that lighteth every man, even though the Light has shined In darkness, and the darkness has comprehended it not.” The other reason is that He undertook, as a missionary, to dissipate the darkne of this world by a revelation of Go personal love and righteousness sa as to re-establish His authority over an apostate humanity. His resurrection proved that the cross was a step to- Wward the throne of the universs, Back of the great commission was the authority of His love, His 1ife and His labor as a missionary. He had won the hearts of men by His | message so that they were ready to “Go,” when He Issued the marching orders to His folowers. Backed by such unlimited authority, Jesus issued the great commission In a few words the Lord made clear that they were to undertake a world- wide service, that would reach the |1ast man, with the gospel. They were ordered to prepare men for member. ship in the Kingdom of God by mak- ing Jesus Christ known unto them, When they had evangelized men so that they were prepared for member- ship in the Kingdom they were to naturalize them by “baptizing them Into the new relation and possibil- itles implied by the names Father, Rev. E. C. Primm to Preach at Son, and Holy Spirit; then leading them on to guard the whole teaching of Him who taught you.” They were summoned to evangelize, enlist and educate all natlo: While the Master had made His missionary programs very plain, yet He found It necessary to emphasi: it again In the last word which He spoke to them before His ascension. It is possible that His promise to be present with them may Lave A aroused their patriotic interest in the natlonal restoration of their op- pressed countrymen to their anclent independence, when He referredd to the “promise of the Father.” Thelr mistaken interpretation of Messlanic prophecy (if it was mistaken) met with no rebuke from the Lord. Jesus recalled them from trying to solve the problems of the future to consider their present duty to &t- tempt the world wide missionary pro- gram that He had outlined. There were four zomes of progress that could not be undertaken until after they were endued with Divine power. Théy were to commence their world- wide witnessing at Jerusalem, where He had been crucified by His ene- mies, then into Judea, which was their native state, and then they were to try to win their neighboring commonwealth of Samaria and thence into “Uttermost parts of the world.” In the missionary program of the Master, there was a place for com- munity work, state missions, home and foreign missions. Dr. Montgomery has well said, con- rning Christ's program, that “Those 0 would reduce missions to purely elical proclamation of the Good find here an_equally binding command to teach. Those who would make misstons only social settle- ments and agencies for the diffusion of the blessings and benefits of mod- ern_clyilization, find here firmly em- bedded the perpetuation of one of the two ordinances left by our Lord to His Church, and by a ir impiicatlo the implanting of the church itself. Before they 1ook a step toward car ing out the Maste missionary p gram they patlently waited and prayed In Jerusalem until the Lord's promise of power became a persona experience. They then started the work of winning the world, whicl unfinished Ask is our p nal re- WILL CONTINUE SERIES. Rev. J. C.
