From the Detroit News. The colors used as badges of mourn- ing vary in different countries. In this country, as in Europe, the ordi- nary color for mourning is black. In China, as with the ancient Spar- tan and Roman ladies, it is white; in Turkey, it is blue or violet; in Egypt, yellow: in Ethiopia, gray. Some have attempted to trace the associations which caused the adop- tion of the various colors to natural causes. Thus black, which is the privation of light, is supposed very appropriately to denote the privation of life; yellow Is the color of leaves when they fall and signifies death is the end of all human hopes. In the east to cut the hair was con- sidered a sign of bereavement; among the Romans, on the contrary, it was deemed a mark of sorrow to let it grow. 1| 3 HUMAN FACE PROFILE IN WHITE MOUNTAINS [Seen in Famous Franconia Notch 1,500 Feet Above Profile Lake. ‘Worshiped by Indians. From the Detroit News. The “Old Man of the Mountains,” a remarkable semblance of the human face seen in profile, 1s in the Fran- onia range of the White mountains of New Hampshire. It is situated in the famous Franconia notch, 1.500 feet above Profile lake, and consists of three disconnected ledges of gran- ite which have an aggregate helght of about forty feet. One ledge forms the forehead, an- other the nose and upper lip and the third the chin. According to tradition, this image was _worshiped by _the Indians. Hawthorne in his story, “The Greaf Stone Face.” refers to this natural phenomenon. Some Piffle Notations.
