The most important paintings are the three panels of the Reredos, the cen- tral one showing Christ crowned as “King of Kings." In the two side panels are life-size figures of the four evangelists. Rev. Dr. Oertel was born in Ger- many on November 3, 1823, He came to this country when twenty years old and served in the civil war. At the age of forty-eight he was or- dained a priest in the Episcopal Church In order that he might be a preacher and teacher to the people living in the mountains of North Carolina. Besides being a minister and an artist he was a wood carver, and a number of examples of his woodwork are contained in_ the Church of the Incarnation. Prob- ably the best known of the works of Dr. Oertel is the well known paint- ing called “Rock of Ages,” the orig- inal of which was sold in 1868 to Augustus Stoors of Brooklyn. A luncheon club has been organized by the Men's Organized Bible Class Assoclation of the District of Colum- bia. The first meeting was held Octo- ber 25 at the City Ciub. The object is to bring members into closer fellowship to the end that they may be of mutual help to each other. A meeting was held in St John's Episcopal Church last Tuesday to dis- cuss details of the exhibit of the work of the Episcopal Chureh in the | provincs of Washington in the fleld of religious education. This exhibit will be held in the parish hall of Epiphany Church during the meet- |ings of “the synod of the province, November and 22, The synod is the legislative body of the province and meets every i Yyear, except in those years in which a meeting of the general convention of the Episcgval Church is called. {1t is composc¥ of all the bishops in | the province and four clerical depu- | ties and four lay deputies from each diocese, elected by the diocesan con- | vention. “The diocese of Washington. which includes the District of Colum- bia and Montgomery, Prince Georges, Charles and St. Mary’s countles of Maryland, fogether with the diocese of Maryland, of which the See city is Baltimore; the diocese of Easton, comprising the ecastern shore of Maryland, the diocese of Virginia, which includes the counties north of Richmond; the dioccse of southern Virginia, 'centering at Norfolk, and the dioc of southwestern Vir- ginla, with the See at Roanoke, are all part of the province of Wash- ington.
