52. FEDERATION ASKS |7 - ANNUITY INCREASE | weary and Wants Maximum $1,200 a Year for Retired Fed- eral Employes. Increases in annuities to govern- ment employes retired under the civil service retirement law were asked in resolutions adopted at the final ses- sion yesterday of the Retirement Federation of Civil Service Employes at the Continental Hotel. The federation, reindorsing the Lehlbach bill calling for certain amendments to the retirement law, asked an increase in the annuities to a maximum of $1,200 a year. from the present maximum of $720 a year. Optional'retirement after thirty years of service and reduction of the gen- eral retirement age to sixty-five years also were indorsed. Pledge Considerntion. Representative Louis W. Fairfield | of Indiana and Representative Lamar Jeffers of Alabama pledged the sym- pathetic consideration of the House committee on civil service to the amendment of the retirement law at & banquet held this afternoon at the hotel following the adjournment of the two-day convention. “What 1 at is that Uncle Sam shall be a decent employer of labor.” declared Representative Fairchild. Boiled Cabbage | % ] smell boiled cabbage roods away, as I am toiling home, and like a warhorse snort, and cay, “That smell is worth & pome. When one is oppressed by labors in the mart, boiled cabbage soothes his savage breast, and heals his ach- ing heart. No priccless orchid can supplant the cabbage fair to see; now blessings on my thoughtful aunt, who cooks such greens for me.” The guys who bask in gilded case say cabbage makes them sick; they have to eat imported cheese to get the proper kick. Once plain and wholesome grub sufficed, but now such grub they mock, and call for victuals highly spiced, and condi- ments that knock. For idleness de- stroys the edge of honest appetite; but I can eat an iron wedge and find it tastes just right. And when at evening I repair along the home- ward lane, the scent of cabbage on the air allays my inward pain. Sometimes a haughty neighbor shrieks when that smell hits his face, esthetic people hold their beaks and say it’s a disgrace. When I'm returning from the quest of plunks and minted bones, I'm sure that Araby the blest no sweeter fragrance owns. How sweet the breath beneath the hill of Sharon’s ! dewy rose! But there’s a fragrance sweeter still where yonder cabbage grows. The rose is sweet until it's spoiled by breezes bleak and ra but it is worthless when it's boiled, and doesn’t make good slaw.
