THE - EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. FRENGH DIG UP BONES| Envelope Used Tuwice Pathetic Sidelight on Germany Today :BURIED-15,000 YEARS Boientists Find Only Existing Human Skeletons Which Rep- resent Aurignacean Age. Cable to The Star and Philadelphia Publle = Ledger. Copyright, 1923, PARIS, October 31.—The only hu- man skeletons of the Aurignacean age yet found have been unearthed &t Solutre, near Macon, in the depart- ment of Saone-et-Loire. They date back to the quaternary epoch and are at least 15,000 years old. Detalls of thelr discovery were reported to the Academy of Sciences by M. De- peret of the Lyons Faculty of Sci- ence. ‘The skeletons are three in number, two being those of men between twenty-five and thirty years of age and the third being that of a woman. One of the men was evidently a war- rior who dled fighting, as a plece of flint was found firmly imbedded in his skull. All three are more than six feet tall and denote persons of fine physique, with exaggerated lower jaws and perfect teeth. All were buried with their faces turned to the €ast. Above their heads were rude slabs of stone, which evidently once projected above the earth's surface. The district in which they were found Is one of the most truitful pre- historic lands of France. In two acres there the bones of thousands of wild horses have been found. These animals were the staple article of food for people of the Aurigna- cean age living in that territory, but why the locality was used as a Char- nel house for the bones of horses still |y, is a mystery. French scientists state that the @iscovery of the human skeletons at Solutre proves the ethnical relation of the horse hunters of the Saone valley, the Traglodytes of the Vezers region and the coasts of the Medi- terranean at Menton. ALASKA TO SEE FIRST FIREWORKS IN 21 YEARS By the Associated Press. FAIRBANKS, Alaska, October 31— As one result of the unseasonably warm weather Alaska is experienc- ing, citizens of this city tonight will see their first fireworks display in twenty- one years. The exhibition was arranged by a Yocal newspaper, so children could see bhow their fellows in lower latitudes celebrate the national birthday. Fire- here on July 4 are account of the twenty- of daylight at that season. The continued lack of the snow usual at this time of the year has crmitted the roads and streets to ecome unusually dusty. Merchants and housewives are complaining of the inadequacy of street sprinkling arrangements. Street sprinkling in cities of Interior Alaska at this time of the year is an innovation. There is no sign of snow on the hills and the nights have been like summer. The temperature has been between 40 and 60 degrees above zero. The other day a Washington woman received a letter from a friend living in Germany. Happening to open the envelope wide, the reciplent noticed handwriting on the inside, and an ex- amination disclosed the fact that the writer had carefully taken apart an envelope in which she had received a letter, turned it inside out and pasted it all together again. To such straits persons once well-to-do now aré re- duced. Paper, always scarce since the war, is now still further depleted by the government presses, which roar night and day turning out next-to-worth- less notes. She sent the letter, by the way, in the hands of a traveling friend to mail in America; the postage on it, she explains, would have cost 10,000,000 marks. The tragic and the grotesque are in- extricably mingled in Germany of to- day, says the writer, who, in spite of privations, maintains her sense of hu- “I could not help laughing yes- runs the letter, “when my brother-in-law and one of his_colleagues, men in high stations and with titles, went to the adjoining villages drawing a well sized hand- cart to get a few sacks of potatoes. “Butter at present costs 130,000,0: marks a pound and the rent of two small rooms is 260,000,000 marks a month; In other words, a month’s rent costs a roomer the value of two pounds of butter.
