THE DOUBLE CHANCE rmmm..lr-—wmuuo--dmw' (Continued from Yesterday’s Star.) ANDY went off to his work to ruminate. He had no wish to give Stead up to the authorities so long as he could make out of him what they would give; besides, he thought he knew a way of squeezing him for more. And as he hacked and hewed at the shining black coal in the Jittle hole in which he was working, doubled up like some antediluvian ani- mal of strange shape, he cogitated on many plans for getting Stead out of the mine and away from Mannersley. Two or three hours later he perceived a feasible plan of escape, and after much thought he was so pleased with it that he set off to Stead in his dun- geonlike refuge to talk it over with him. The accumulated ceal dust lay thick s the sand in the seashore on the floors of the gallery by which Tandy ap- proached the place where the fugitive Jay hid. His boots were old and soft in the sole: having a naturally sly manner of approaching anything, which had been accentuated by his poaching habits. he was the entrance of the disused office before Stead, who had certainly not e d to see him, was aware that he w nea and the con- sequence W that Dogger Tandy came full upon a sight which made his fer- ret eyes grow unnaturally large with sheer surprise. Stead sat at th center of the cell-like lamp before him threw on his face and eyes Ta fell on something thing that he had spread out on one of the newspapers which Tandy had brought and, yellow as the light that something glitter and cor- uscated in it like dewdrops in a sum- mer sun. Diamonds! Tandy uttered a little stepped in. Stead made a sound which was more like a woman's frightened scream than anything else, and covered } the sparkling stones with both hands. He turned a livid and snarling face on the miner. “Confound _you!" “What do you st Tandy_stepped rough table in the m; the miner's its light full | But its yellow else—on some- cough and he snapped out. rtle me like that for?" to the table and sat on it. His eyes, covetous and greedy, were fixed on Stead's hands. E; guv'nor, - es “There is no call to use swear words to me what's done so much for you. Stead sullenly “A good deal, guvnor.” replied the n ourge, if you're wanting pe with a few thousands of worth of shiners—well, Dogger ¥'ll naturally expect to have his little bit out of it. Think It over, guv'- nor." That day—though he could not tell by that time whether it was day or night down there, for Tandy sometimes came down by the afterncon shift and sometimes by the night shift—Stead made up his mind to escape. He would take his luck. And with the diamonds in his pocket he groped his way along the pitch-black galleries until he came 1o the part where the disused workings ended and those in use began. And there he met Dozger Tandy. Dogger Tandy took him by the throat with a sudden curse and with the snarl of a dog who sees its bone being stolen, and then began a fight of that sort, Wwhich quickly degenerates into a far worse thing. From the feeling of half-wild_and primitive joy which impelled the Man- nersley folk to give their favorite the heartlest of demonstrations on his re- lease, the entire community was sud- denly brought face to face with the conviction of awful tragedy and sorrow, The men who a moment before had been shouting and yelling at the top of their volces grew strangely silent, and turned to look at cach other with white faces: the women on the fringe of the crowd who had been laughing and | waving their hands at the two cousins on the courthouse ste be; scream and weep. and, in the case of those whose men had gone down with the last shift, to develop hysteric any one there had had tim ! think, he would have noticed th horrible contrast between the calm pitilessness of nature and the terror- striking aspects of the situation. They gazed at the motor and | its occupants with eyes which seem- | ed to see nothing as the driver made his way to the engine house. At any other fime they would have greeted Phillipa and her cousin with a rous- ing cheer. As the motor stopped and its occupants got out, some of the women rushed “orward and seized the young proprietress anywhere they 'Oh, Miss Phillipa, my man’s down —and us only wed a month, miss! And he hurried out, leaving Phillipa and Clinton alone. The others in the engine house were busied in various ways—the cousins stood apart in a corner looking out upon the anxious, patient crowd outside. And suddenly they turned and looked at each other. “Phillipa,” said Clinton, “you never doubted me?” “Never for one moment, Clinton,” she answered. “I knew it would come right” he said. “It's been like an awful dream, these last three years., But—Iit's over now." “Yes,” she sald. “It's over—now. CITY'S REBELS LED BY “FRAU” GENERAL Woman Directs Capture of Crefeld Police for Rhine Separatists. By Cable to “ecifz.rrn::‘k’, Ghicago Daily News. CREFELD, Germany, October 30.— Crefeld has no food,'but it has plenty of fighting. Civil warfare has turned this industrial city upside down. Tens of thousands of iron and textile workers walk the streets, demanding “bread.” This is the city where, three months age, the workingmen plundered shops and where a number of them were killed when the police opened fire. This incident has remained so vivid in the minds of the laborers that they cheered when they learned that the chief of police, Schneider, had been killed in Tuesday night's fighting. Three bullets in his body showed that the sentence of death passed upon him three months ago, after he had ordered the police to fire on the mob, had actually been carrfed out. Woman Leads Movement. When the writer visited Mme, Schmidt, the woman general of the separatist movement, with the aid of one girl, was counting a stack of billion mark notes, which represented the pay of the Rhenish republic's shock troops assembled here. This stoutish woman was at the head of affairs in Crefeld in the absence of Matthes and Dr. Dorten. In the kitchen of the government building, which had just been taken by the separatists, Frau Schmidt re- ceived the write¥, while outside hand grenades wore exploding and rifies were being fired without doing much damage. “Isn't this the kitchen?" was asked. ou are not going to eat all that? indicating the paper money covering the tables. Men Seeking Foed. refeld is virtually without food,’ the woman replied. “Our men have Dbeen out all the evening requisition- ing food. I hope they will return with bread, meat and vegetables. Just then a volley of rifle shots showed that there was s8till some fighting left in the 200 policemen in the rathaus. It was a couple of hours later that the police and the mayor announced they would surrender if they were guaranteed safe conduct, The mayor, whose daughter had been taken prisoner by the separatists, put up & brave front until the minutes. “I am the father of the city first and only after that am I the father of my family,” he said when shown a letter written by his daughter, en- u;le%llns him to avold further blood- shea. We'l] have a rescue party down in no time, and Mr. Quinton "and I are golng | down with it. We'll not rest till we've got every man and lad out safe and sound; and if we can't—well, then Heavens will be done. Show ' your- selves brave men and women! Then he turned and ran for the en- gine house, where Quinton had al- ready Installed Phillipa, and was busily talking to an anxious and whitefaced knot of officials, who were pouring in upon him disjointed scraps of information, “There'll be about down—maybe a few less, sir. “It must have been in one of the far workings—the shaft's clearing now.” “The running gear's all right—we can get dow:! Quinton gathered up every scrap of news as it fell, and sent one man here, another there. The entire staff began to bustle about, and Quinton turned to Phillipa and the young baronet. “We'll be able to get down soon,” he sald. “I'll pick out the most likely men as volunteers—every man in the yard would go, given the chance.” “I'm going,” said Clinton. ‘The manager looked at him with a keen glance, and then at’ Phillipa- Her eyes telegraphed her answer to him, ‘8. NEW YORK, October 31.—Disso- lutfon of the Salvation Army on the ground that it is engaged unlawfully in the waste paper business was sought at a hearing before Deputy Attorney General John J. Dwyer by commercial waste paper _dealers. They charged that ths Salvation Army, through cheap labor, recruited from 'the ranks of unfortunates for whom it cares, was overbidding them in buying waste paper and under- bidding them in selling it. The attorney general was asked to Institute an action to vacate the charter of the organization, because “in conducting a waste paper bui ness it violated the provisions of the law under which it was created, and abused the privileges conferred upon it as religious and charitable agency.” The action was brought by Charle McBride, treasurer of Wilsos Paper Stock Company.
