MANDESCRBES ESCAPE N QUAKE Benjamin Jumped From Hotel Window Just as Build- ", 1 ing Crumbled. | Jesse Benjamin, 1411 Montague street, described his narrow escape in the Japanese earthquake in an ad- dress before the Sixteenth Street Highlands Citizens’ Assoclation in the Sixth Presbyterian Church,.16th and Kennedy streets, last night. He was standing in his room in’the Grand Hotel, which overlooked the harber at Yokohama, when the earth- | | quake started. After seeing buildings tumble all around him and feeling the hotel rock to its foundations, he ran to a second-story window and jumped. Just as he landed on the ground the Luilding crumpled behind him, some of the debris striking him in the back. He was only slightly injured, how- ever. Mr. Benjamin graphically described how, after his rapid descent to the ground, he joined others in an at- tempt to find a haven of refuge. > sea_would be w a strong wind he plight of this | > of fire from ng it and also gh swells resulting from se manipulating the | a risk of their lives, suc- | from ' wave some time where the boat and fire.
