Ellis in the The old anchor Tts Review of Reviews city (Angora), with its dominating citadel, cluttered up with reminders of oldest antiquity, {represents no only ie glory that was Greece, And the grandeur that was Rome. but also the primitiveness' that w Tartary and Mongolia and Turkesta Just as the walls of the fortress are ascinatingly and clumsily built by Turkish hands, of fragments of mar- ble and granite and brick from three and years of successive iza- nd dominions—a bit of an 3 ian sarcophagus side by side’ with an inscribed or sculptured Roman of Grecian marble; and an Arabesque design in stone buttress- ing Byzantine “brick; with stately columns and pilasters basely us masonry—so this present Angora and its government Is a hodge-podge of the persisting traits of the old peoples who have dwelt upon or overrun this region for ages. The city its reeks with the dead, dead ecarth and fts saturated filthi- ness; for most of modern Turkey practices no better sanitation than its ancestral hordes under Osman or Toghurul or Tamerlane. A Turkish physician told me in Angora that while typhus has been conquered in the city, people are peculiarly subject to infe tion, the slightest cut or abrasion being a hospitable doorway for germs; and this he attributed to the jaccumulated decay of the heaped,up and worn-out soil upon which the ¢ is built. The essential primitivenes of all Turks is revealed by the simple fact that during four rs of oc- cupation as ional capital, not foot of sewer pipe has been installed in Angora: nor has any other effort been made to Improve its sanitary conditjons, or to clean or pave its streets, or to better its housing con- ditions, or any other manner to modernize the city that embodies the idea_of new Turkey. The trenches in France were more sanitary than are the main streets of Angora. Speaking of Bananas. From the Miami Herald. The business of growing bananas commercially in Florida has in- creased rapidly in the last twelve months, according to reports being received by W. E. Bolles of Oldsmar, secretary of the Florida Banana Growers' Association. One man pro- duced more than 5,000 bunches, while many others grew between 1,000 and 5,000. Several forty-acre tracts are being prepared for planting in Octo- ber. Most of the larger piantations are In the southerly three-quarters of the state, although there are some good-sized plantings in the northerly quarter. California and Texas grow very few bananas compared to Flor- ida, which prod s more than all the other southarn states combined. From the Columbus Dispatch. We recently were shown the memo- randum book of a man who had prac- tically all his belongings listed in it. Among the detailed description of his property was the list of the makes of tires on his motor car with the fol- lowing anpotatiop: “All subject to change.” As though that were not eniough some one added, “Without no- tice.”
