A special meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary of the Episcopal Diocese of ‘Washington is to be held in St John's Church, 16th and H streets northwest, Tuesday at 2 p.m., to con- sider what steps can be taken by jthe Episcopal churches of Washing- ton for the relief of the missionaries in the devastated districts of Japan. The National Council of the Epis- copal Church estimates that $500,000 will be required for immediate needs. A cablegram received from Bishop McKim stated that the missionaries were safe, but the buildings and other property of the mission was totally destroyed. This includes the cathedral and seven other churches in Tolio and Yokohama. Still more imporfant is the loss of St. Luke's Hospital, which was totally destroyed by_fire. Preparations were being made at the time of the disaster for the erec- tion of a new hospital building at St. Luke's and the foundation had | been completed only a few weeks ago. These are undoubtedly de- stroyed, as were the two homes for nurses, one for Japanese and one for American women. The bulldings of St. Paul's Uni- versity and the Central Theological College were partly destroyed. The former was a steel and concrete building, considered one of the best structures in Japan. Shelter, heat- ing, clothing and the most indis: pensable household furnishings must be replaced immediately. The sum of $25.000 was cabled. to Bishop McKim from the department ; of missionaries of the Episcopal Church. Another $100,000 will be needed to erect temporary bulldings for St. Luke's Hospital to carry on the battle against disease. Just what part of these sums it is expected to raise in thedi ocese of Washington is not known, but the meeting Tues- day will lay plans for the imme- diate solicitation of contributions. DR. RICE'S SERMON TOPIC. “Religion an Institution” will be the subject of the sermon by Dr. Clarence E. Rice at the Church of Our Father (Universalist), 13th and { L streets northwest, tomorrow morn- ing at 11 o'clock. Free kindergarten is held at the same time. The Sunday school convenes at 9:45. The devo- tional meeting of the Young People's Christian Unfon at 7 p.m. will be led by William Nobbe, reports from the recent national convention held Muncle, Ind., being the chief topic.
