GRAND ARMY LOSES 20000 N N YEAR Only Forty Left in One State, Civil War Veterans Learn at Convention. 8y ed Press. MILWAUKEE, Wis,, September 6.— Election of officers late this afternoon held the attention of the members of the National G. A. R., assembled here today. Three candidates are for election as commander-in-chief, to succeed James W. Willett, with sentiment swinging strongly in favor of Gaylord M. Saltzgaber of Ohio. He is opposed for the oflice by Frank A. Walsh of Milwaukee, and Dr. L. F. Arensberger of Uniontown, Pa. Second only in interest to the elec- tion of officers is the selection of the encampment city for 1924, with Bos- ton and Pacadena bidding for the honor. Indications are that Boston will be the choice. Reading of reports of officers con- eumed the morning hours of today's session. in the field 20,000 Die In Year. Retir- ng Commander-in-chief Willett in concluding the report of his steward- ship suggested duction rather than increase in the auxiliary organiza- tion, urged changing the name of the Bons of Veterans, and commented upon the death during the past year of 20.000 members of the Grand Army of the Republ r ranks are thinnin, he said. “During the past vear sixty deaths of past department commanders have been recorded in the general orders. LOS ANGELES, September 6.— Marriage is 50-50, said Judge "John ‘W. Summerfield of the superior court, in ordering Mrs. Mary Scranton to pay her, husband, Charles Scranton, $6 a week as temporary alimony pending trial of his suit for separate maintenance. Scranton testified his wife, who earns $150 a month in a bank, de- serted him. He said he was ill and unable to work. 3 “This couple married for better or worse.” remarked the court. ‘““The husband has broken in har- ness. 1 am afraid the wife will have to pull a doubla load for a ‘While, at least. Marriage is a case of give and take.” PLIGHT OF WHEAT FARMERS STRESSED Anderson Says Minimizing Dis- tress Is Dangerous. Propaganda. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, September 6.—Minimiz- ing the plight of the American wheat farmer because other divisions of the farming industry are in a more pros- perous condition was characterized as a “well nigh fatal mistake” by Minnesota, president of the Wheat Council of the United States, at a meeting of the directors of the organ- ization here. Efforts to belittle the condition of the wheat farmer are capable of pro- ducing a dangerous apathy concern- ing the present impoverishment more than a third of lall the farmers in the United States, he declared. ‘The investment in wheat farming is nearly .one-third total capital, more than the surplus and undivided Repersentative Sydney O. Anderson of mers are 34% per cent of all the far- mers in the United States. Wheat farm investment is nearly four times #8 much as the total investment in all the coal mines of the United States.” . Recent devolopments, however, are encouraging, he said. Crop fore- casts are not being realized, he asserted, adding that it domestic con- sumption were equal to that in 1911 to 1915, and if the crop turned out is not over 750,000,000 bushels the surplus will not be over 100,000,000 bushels, which he sald could be handled. Harrison Fuller of St. Paul was selected as executive vice president ot the council, Grosvenor Dawe was made secretary and F. W. Karl of Detroit, Kans., was elected a director. WOULD FENCE CLOUDS. ST. PAUL, Minn, September 6. Sults asking that the Curtiss North- west Airplane Company, and Edward Bellieu, an aviator, be-enjoined from flying over their farm property were filed here by Gilbert O. and Robert Johnson. A permanent injunction to restrain the fiyers and damages of $7.000 each is sought by the Johnsons, who allege that the damages were caused by the falling of an airplane piloted by Bellieu on June 12. Hearing was set for Saturday in the case, sald to be the first of its kind in the northwest.
