Sunday School Lesso BY REV. HUGH T. STEVENSON. Martha and Mary—Lupe, X John, x1:12:8; Mark, xIv Golden text.—Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.—Luke, Bethany, the place where Jesus loved to be, Is the scene of this week's study. There our Lord, who was without a home from the time He left the carpenter's shop in Nazareth un- , til the completion of His ministry,| found the shelter and security of a home when He faced the -darkest hours of His earthly career. It was situated about two miles from Jeru- | salem, just over the brow of the Mount of Olives. Its location made it an ideel suburban home, where the! Master could find rest and peace in the time of His greatest need. It was free from the disputes and dangers of the temple and Jerusalem. We have the record of four differ-| ent visits which he made to Beth-! any and of two banquets given Him. Tt is quite probable that He vis- ited Bethany at other times those mentioned. when He went we are informed, as the gri teacher, t sympathizing friend, \ the suffering Savior and as ascending Lord. Between two mentioned its He was given a banquet as a testimonfal of love and loyalty. Between the last two | mentioned visits we have the record of another one ven at which there appeared to be a spirit of discord be- tween Martha, been the and Mary, thought domest] erview to st mily in ous as | the head of the Bethany her sister, whom careless’ concern bilities. 1t » poise of Ch prominently caused by’ the rament the g her s temp of not mentioned in our lesson, : would fail to understand the re- lationship of Jesus to the Bethany home {f we did not speak of Lazarus, who w brother of Martha and moves through the latter ‘of the Master's life with an al- most unnatu ery and majesty He §s silent gnificant in tory.” The connected \ Christ's exercising His power over the spirit of Lazarus. dead and buried for four it returned and vivified th Lazarus, created an intense puh rere Jesus. She sought to minister to His comfort in every way possible. Back of every step and act was a great heart for the Master that longed for Him to enjoy the relief and peace of their home, free from all worrles and care, caused by His intense public ministry. and__ industr: She saw to Her efforts did much to make Beth-! any a place where Jesus loved to be. He knew that there was retreat open for Him around Jeru- salem, where He was certain to be the recipient of the love and ministering care of the Bethany home, where He Ioved to be whenever it was possible for Him to find an opportunity to en- Joy their fellowship. While Martha was busily engaged in the culinary preparations that would minister to the inner man Mary de- tected another need of service. She possessed an unusual spiritual tem- perament and mental powers. She was a mystic and to a remarkable degree understood her Lord. She was very sympathetic and apparently intuitive- 1y read the mind of the Master. Tt was she who grasped the fact * that He knew that in place of being made king by the force of popular opinfon that Jesus knew that the multitude and disciples were wrong. She understood the meaning of His messages that pointed out the rapid approach of the cross. She saw that the very joy that the Lord had brought to” them when He demon- strated His mastery over all souls, living or dead. by restoring their brother Lazarus to them from the grave, had served to hasten His death. She understood it, but none of the others appears to have realized it. She detected his hatred of death when she fell at his feet and ex- presse@ her regrets at His when Lazarus died. as well as her faith in Christ's power. Death had never claimed a victim in the pres- _ence of Jesus. When she lamented *the absence of the Master when Laz- arus passed away ary had looked upon the face of her weepinz Lord and seen His indignation, “when He groaned in the spirit and was troubled” by death’s presence among men. - He knew that it was in the world through the sin of men and that it ought not to have been and would not have been present with men if they had not disobeyed God and failed to come up to His mark. Mary saw that Jesus needed sym- pathy. It was this that prompted her to anoint the feet of Christ with a “pound of ointment of pure nard, very precious,” and “wipe His feet with her hair,” until the house was filled with the odor. Martha never com- plained or criticized her sister Mary for her generosity. She rejoiced in the fact that Mary had given a.dem- onstration of the devotion and love which they held for the Master. She probably would have hesitated about giving her all to the Lord had she known that it would have precipi- tated the betrayal of the Teacher by Judas, whose mercenary spirit pro- tosted against her generosity, claim- ing that it was a waste. Mary had remembered the defense that Jesus made of her act. Possibly it was this that helped her to under- stand how much the Christ longed at the moment for human sympathy. She detected His needs at that moment and tried to minister to them by what ap- peared to her sister to be indifference to her social and domestic oblig: tions.. She took her place at the Mas. ter's feet to listen attentively and sympathetically to His message. When Martha complained of her careless- ness and neglect of her duties Jesus defended Mary's attitude and did it in a manner that did not condemn the work of Martha. The Master's poise averted a domes- tio difference in the Bethany home. It was a difficult situation ‘and by pleserving His calmness and control the, Lord quieted the troubled spirit of Martha and commended Mary's at- titude. ~There-is- not-a- aingle. -wosd t could possibly be ¢onstrued into to | She had to work out her ! no_better | adsence | 1 | as a hostess by considering the spirit- }1s a need of both types in His church. {There is a danger that men are apt than | to as | helpful ! | | who appears to have | AMary home. | which shall not be taken away from Martha | yg aif- | ! two | joffcers. ol who had been | | {Long; | | v ot { the |Superintendent ‘intermediate society, An elabor- | | i ! hed to serve and show she | the i more | (gdensburg, t others had | his. ¢ all | Marion She was | uate | | household loved the Lord Jesus. the first| {son n criticism of Martha in His suggestion that only one course would be neces- sary for the dinner. It has its part in the social realm as much as the problem of preparing a menu. If there is not the proper atmosphere then all the other efforts fall. The hostess that Is successful in enter- taining owes her success to her care in selecting her guests and assigning them at the table so that they may be congenial. Mary realized that the Master needed some other form of ministering at that moment and she was commended by-the Lord because she had put the first things first. She had helped in performing her share ual and mental needs of Jesus at that | moment Christ's comment shows that there to get a false conception of the work done by others. People are apt to over- emphasize the task which they are in- terested in doing and frequently over-' look the value of some other person’s efforts. The sacrifice of seif, the sur- render of one's will and the subordi- nation of self-consciousness will open up our hearts so that we can minlster one another in a spiritual and ! manne The secret of the Bethany hom. uccess is found in the fact that every member of that Let us seek to make our homes like the one in Bethany, where Jesus loved to seek rest and fellowship, through winning every member of our home circle for the Master.
