By the Associated Press ATLANTA, Ga., August 11.—A heavy tax on all opera companies appearing in Georgla was voted yesterday by the house of representatives. An amendment to the general tax act would provide that opera companies appearing in cities of more than 100,- 000 population shall be taxed $2,500 a {day and $1,000 in cities of less popu- {1ation. For a number of vears a group of Atlanta citizens has underwritten contracts to bring the Metropolitan Opera Company of New York to At- lanta. A tax voted two vears ago has !been paid by these guarantors in the P Representatives Stovall, _Knight, Pope and Wood fought for the tax Make Up Defleit. “The people who attend grand opera are able to pay the tax,” Mr. Pope <aid. “I plead with you to tax these luxury-rolling, silk-rattling, diamond- wearing, monkey-petting persons who | attend grand opera. Why should we let them escape when we tax the poor, down-trodden farmer?” Miss Bessle Kempton, who is one of the two woman members of the house, told the legislators that the { guarantors of the opera company's performances in Atlanta had been compelled to meet deficits each year and the tax was met by them. The objecting representatives were invited by Representative Smith to | attend grand opera next year, assur- ing the members they would enjoy each performance. | Object to Italians. “If you folks want to hear Italiang sing in some lenguage you cannot un- derstand then you should be willing to pay the tax.” one of the amend- {ment supporters shouted. “There is ay much difference be- tween bringing a_grand opera com- pany to Atlanta and bringing a chau- tauqua to a small town as there is between a porterhouse steak, sur |rounded by mushrooms, and two | small mutton chops,” Representative Wood replied in answer to a state- ! ment that if opera companies were taxed chautauqua organizations also should be ussessed. “You pay the Italians too much,” member shouted. When the first and highest tax amendment was offered for passage it carried and the other proposed changes were declared out of order. |CHARGES CHICAGO COSTS ! CANADA LARGE SUM Hydro Commissioner Declares Di- { version of Water Brings $21,- 000,000 Annual Loss. By the Associated Press. TORONTO, Ontario, August 11.—An annual loss of 21,000,000 is being sus- |tained by the people of Can through the diversion of 300,000 horsepower from the great lakes s tem by the Chicago sanitary officials, Sir Adam Beck, chairman of the On- tarlo hydro commission, declared last night. The Chicago sanitary district takes from 8000 to 10,000 cubic feet of jwater per second for diluting its sewage, o as to make it inoffensive, and for supplying electric light and power, Sir Adam said. This is in con- travention of the governing authori- ties, he added. He sald officials of the Chicago san- itary district in a recent tour of Ca- ! nadian lake citles argued that the di- Version of the water did not affect the Canadian interests and that they were prepared to install regulatory waterworks costing $7.500,000 in_the Niagara river below Buffalo and in the S§t. Lawrence river at Gallops Raplds. Sir Adam stated that the amount of water diverted at times equaled the quantity which passes over the American falls at Niagara. —_— The Canadian Federation ot Labor has :memberlhlp of 22,000, ~
