The benefits to result from the proposed railroad consolidation in this country were explained by Win- throp Moore Daniels, former inter- state commerce commissioner, in an address before the members of the Federal Club, composed of executive officers and technical men of the gov- ernment, at a meeting at the Uni-| versity Club last night. In speaking of the regulatory pow- | #rs of the Interstate Commerce Com- | mission, Mr. Danlels, who now occu- les the Strathcona chair at Yale, | eclared such action would condone | lil-advised railroad building in the| past, the result of which has been the | establishment .of railroads that could | ¥ive very little, if any, returns at all | to _the Investors. ; Charles T. Tittmann sang several | vocal solos and Robert L. Feuerstein | rendered several selections on the | piano. P. B. MecGinty, secretary of | the I. C. C., presided. Mrs. Fuss after she closed her embroid- ery shop Saturday afternoon. Mrs. C. L. Armentraut, 183 € street northeast, employed by Mra. Fuss, thought her employer had taken a day off when she falled to appear Monday morning. Other friends missed her, and telephoned her apartment, but no answer was ved. Mrs. Fuss, lying on the floor be- tween the bathroom and her sleeping room. was able to hear the ringing of the bell, but was unable to make a move toward the instrument. She also heard occupants of other apart- ments moving through the corridor and was comscious of visits pald by ice and milk dealers the three days she remained on the floor. Last night Mrs. Armentraut, fear- Ing something .might have happened to her employer. told friends. men O. T. Trenis and R. F. Willlams tenth precinct ~accompanied friends to the Holland, opened the door to Mrs. Fuss' apartment and found the paralyzed woman on the floor. Near her the policeman found about $75 she had dropped. Misses Jean and Christine Stokes, occupying an apartment near that of Mrs. Fuss, Sunday morning heard a noise such as might be made by & person falling. There was no other noise to attract their attention, they stated, and the incident made no im- pression upon them at the time. —uwhere assistance OF RECKLESS DRIVING Taxicab Offered as Evidence Driver Was Not to Blame for Trafic Mix-Up. Clarence H. Smith, a chauffeur em- ployed by the E. F. Gregg Auto and Tax| Service, operating at the Pow- hatan Hotel, who was charged with reckless driving and colliding, was tried and acquitted in the Traffic Court yesterday by Judge Gus A. Schuldt. This is the first acquittal of a charge of reckless driving under the recent traffic regulation governing this class of cases. Smith was driving east on H street between 9th and 10th and passed a one-ton loaded truck operated by John J. Cousins, colored. Cousins dli- verted his truck striking the rear !right wheel of Smith’s taxicab and [swinging into two heavy passenger autos parked at the curb, both of which, with Cousins’ truck, were bad- ly damaged, Smith's taxicab was not damaged. The attorney for the de- fendant asked Judge Schuldt to walk outside and see that Smith's car was undamaged as evidence that it had not been in collision with any car. and advice are cheerfully given.
