10 Fort Stevens as National Park i' Favored as Tribute to Lincoln Col. John McElroy Declares Spo | Emancipator Saw Tide of Civil War Turn Should Be World Shrine. Restoration and conversion of Fort Etevens into a natlonal park is urged by Col. John McElroy, well known local léader of the Grand Army of the Republic. Col. McElroy belleves Washing- tonlans should take an actlve in- terest In the project. It is likely that the G. A. R. the Sons of Vete- rans, Spanish War Veterans, Ameri- can Legion and other world war men will favor the project, he adds. Dis- cussing the proposition today, Col. McElroy sald: Today all Christendom resounds with Lincoln's fame and everything connected with him has a genuine, wvital interest to every man and woman in the civilized world. Fort Stevens marked the most critical period of the civil war, the most in- tense hour in Lincoln's life. As he stood on the ramparts of the fort and looked with those sadiy pro- phetic eyes of his across the un-| dulating plain, swarming with the, enemies of the republic, there passed before his vision vistas of what should happen from both victory and defeat. Recalls Dark Outlook. “We had then fought with all our might for three and one-ha years ‘”Kpu'. down the rebellion. We had! &one in debt billions of dollars, and Sve had entered upon each vear of the war with high hopes of What we should do before winter. There was a panic, not | only in Washington, but flll‘lhrnui.'h. the loyal stat n the Secretar of War and the g the Army were swept away by the panic. No one seemed to maintain his composure except Lincoln and| n. Grant. . | The greenback, which was life-blood of the business of e country, sank to the valuation of 35 e on the dollar. On July 12, 1864, n greenbacks was paid for $100 in gold. This meant that the finan- | i clear off the glacis in front so as to &ive something of the view that Lin- coln had. Already the spot upon which he stood by the side of Gen. Wright has been defined, and a huge boulder placed there to commemmorate the place. There should be markers placed to show every position of the Union and Confederate forces on that highly critical occasion, with plain in- seription: the markers. Attract Tourists, “If this is done, Fort Stevens will become the Mecca of all the automo- bilists arriving in the city, and of all tourists from abroad. It will prove immensely more attractive than any building, statue or monument that could be put up, and would cost com- paratively little. thing to do is for Washing- tonians themselves to take an interest in the project and bestir themselves |in the initfative. It is likely that the Grand Army of the Republie, the § ns of Veterans, United Spanish War Veterans, American Leglon and world war men will, at their coming na- tional encampments, pass StTONg Teso- lutions in favor of ‘this object lesson in history, and that we can have the whole force of these organizations behind this movement.
