As the court could not determine by how much the verdict was too large, it directed a new trial and decided to let an- other jury fix the amount Murphy was employed on one of the fleet corporation’s vessels and was working in the hold of the ship when a beam fell across his feet. He sued for $40,000, and the jury awarded him the entire amount. The fleet corporation asked for a new trial. Sullivan Orders Police to Give Extra Attention to Children at Play. Interested in the safety of children on the streets during the vacation period, Maj. Daniel Sullivan, superin- tendent of police, has called attention of members of the force to the necessity for looking after the youngsters. An order issued by Maj. Sullivan reads With the advent of the school vacation season it is anticipated that larger use will be made of the streets by the children for purposes of play, which practice, if indulged in to any great extent, will almost certalnly mean an increase in acci- dents to the children, with the probable loss of lefe and limb. “This is a condition which must be met _and corrected as far as possible by the individual officers on the beat, land you will, therefore. whenever children are observed at play in the streets on your beat, warn them against such practice’ and of the dangers attending the use of the jpublic highways as playgrour.ls, and at the same time direct them to the nearest playground. “The Individual officer on the beat can accomplish great results for the personal safety of the children in a missionary way. He should make it a point always to have the children 100k upon him as their best friend He can. by his mere interest in them. bring them to belleve that he is their protector rather than their enemy and he should strive at all times t: secure their confidence ~and assist them whenever possible in thelr per- sonal safety and assoclations.” —— THE WEATHER District of Columbia and Maryland Generally fair and continued warm tonight and tomorrow; gentle vari- able winds.
