lWest Virginfa Today Observes 60th Anniversary of Statehood Rixty years ago today, June 20, 1863," the wéstern and northwestern parts of Virginla, made up of thirty- nine counties beyong the Alleghany mountains, .came into the federal Union, adding .the thirty-fifth star to the American flag, the first and only instance of a peaceful division of one of the older states of our federal Tnion after original organtzation into a state. s At the outbreak of the clvil war Virginia was divided in sentiment re- garding the principles involved In the conflict. Long before the war the Alleghany mountains had divided the state politically and commerctally and in the Sentiment relating to her sys- tem of taxation, revenue and public expendlture into a Virginla and West Virginla. The civil war gave rerma- nent and official definition to the line of demarcation in forming a West Virginia of the grand old common- weaith of the -“Old Dominion.” The Wheeling convention of May, 1. which d a state con- vention. refused recognize the Ftate officers who in opposttion %% the national o ment. It elect- ed Frank Pierpont overnor of Vir- ginia and called a state legislature which claimed to be the legislature ot the state of Virginla and gave its consent to the division of the state. The first convention voted to erect a e to be called “Knawha,™ but it was afterward changed to West Virginia. In this_sixtieth anniversary of the birth of West Virginia it is a matter of justice to the original mountain colontal section of the “Old Domin- fon” to recall an interesting chapter of history. perhaps forgotten in this Beneration. - At the beginning of the revolu- tionary war the colony of Virginia had a” debt of §$6.000,000, which she had incurred pushing her clvilization Westward. At the close of the revo- lution this debt had grown to $14,- 000,000; at the time of the ratification of the Constitution of the United States to $15.000,000, and at the end of the war of 1812, $25,000,000. Many complex questions confronted the fathers in their government bullding, but the greatest of all was a new government without a foot of territory of her own and a hundred thousand revolutionary veterans in the struggle for independence.
