4,253 Pupils Pass Health Test ! by D. C. Schools Standards Set Marked Improvement Noted in General i Physical Development of Both Boys and Girls, Experiments Show. F6ur thousand, two hundred and Prey-three grammar grade pupils of the District public sehools have proud- 1y carried home with them in the last few days either an atractive certificate or a neat little pin, significant of their athletic ability in passing general Physical and health tests conducted throughout the school year by physical training teachers under the direction of Dr. Rebecca Stoneroad, head of the physical training department. Of the total number, 2,670 qualified a simple physical efficiency test, while the remainder passed a more rigid test. Thousands of other children racticed, but failed to receive one of the coveted prizes, owing to thelr in- ability to qualify in only one of the requirements. Value of Test Proved. As & result of these tests, Dr. Stone- Toad pointed out today, that a marked improvement has been noted in the general physical development of both Rirls and boys by their ability to pass the physical efficlency tests. Each boy knows the required standard of ath- letle ability of others of his own age in running, chinning and jump- & and endeavors to come up to the me, she said. The inspiration is that of self-improvement or an ideal o be attained, rather than that of merely beating a classmate. This iethod differs from the usual team ‘thletics in that all pupils constantly vractice and work, instead of merely a_picked team not so much In need of all-around physical exercise. All puplis who passed the first tests were given the attractive certificate worthy of framing, so that parents and friends may know of success 4nd_achievement along these lines. AS a prerequisite for the first ath- .Jetic test, a pupil must not be more than 10 per cent under normal weight. This was adopted as an in- centive to pupils to come up to the jpamard in weight and as a means ~ % proventing anv overtaxing on the part of weaklings. The second higher physical effi- clency test includes not only athletic ability, but also certain phases of health’ work, so that in order to ‘qual’v ‘pupils must not only pass the first test In a previous year. but also have a good rating in posture, heaith habits, physical exercises and not be more than 10 per cent under normal welght. he work, Dr. Stoneroad empha- sizod, is entirely ‘voluntary, on the part of both pupils and teadhers. so 1hat what has been accomplished has n done with interest and enthusi- m. in Lack FEquipment.
