PRIEST ADMITS SALE OF RARE ART PIECE Thirteenth Century Virgin and the Child Sold to Aid His Church, He Says. By the Associated Press PARIS. June & The antique deal- ers involved in the alleged substi- tutlon of a modern copy for the genu- ine thirteenth century statue of the Virgin and the Child in the Church of S§t. Sauveur-sur-Ecole. near the for- est of Fontainebleau. now are endeav- oring to throw the blame on the vil- jage priest, and the priest. Abbe Henri Totte, according to the Matin. has come forward with the admission that he succumbed fo the temptation of selling the statue for 2.300 francs. He is alleged 1o have said he disposed of the statue to aid in church wel- fare work, hoping the nianufa ctured substitute would not be dise vered by his country parishioners. The Matin reproduces W vitten re- port from the Duc de Trevise, giving an account of the abbe's statement, in which the abbe tel of his desire ta build up his struggling church, Lut declares that now he must make known “the cruel truth.” The priest, according to the statement. said he fong had resisted the blandishments of art deale who sought to secure the original statue. Lack of Judgment. “Rut lttle by little,” the statement quotes him as having said. “I found myself involved without realizing it The dealers, one of whom is unknown to me. urged me strongly. 1 cannot t*11 how much | regret my error. But let no one see in it exactly a mis- deed, but rather lack of judgment.” The dealers concerned, according to the Matin, said they had con- cealed the wh truth of the trans- action out of pity for the priest, but now that he had spoken they ould make known thelr of the ¢ M Melun, an antiqf y. who hand- led the affair. he had a |1:I(rr from the priest demanding 8.000 francs for the statue. The priest made it plain that the money was to be used for the church. The an- tique dealer. however, paid only 2.500 for it, conditio n supplying & substitute . This dealer resold it to a Paris an- tiquary for S.500 francs, the latter supplying the substitute. which 'rl)s! him 1,000 francs. Becoming Increasingly Popular as Beverage. From the Pictorial Revies More tea iz used in this country every vear, as it is becoming increas- ingly popular as a luncheon, supper and afterncon beverage. Do you know that even the selection of yvour teapot I8 important? The market- man often has a come-back on tea which he is sure is very ®ood, be- cause his customer has used either a tin pot or a broken enameled one in which the metal is wxposed Either of these will give the infusion a pe- culiar metallic taste, due to the ac- tion of a very minute amount of tani- nic acid on the metal. Or perhaps the tea has heen allowed to stand In the pot for several minutes when the temperature is 8o high that it Is practically boiling. The tannin is ex- tracted and gives a very bitter flavor. and the deli us aroma is lost, Package teas generally have a uni- form flavor and are clean always be kept in containers which are as nearly air-tight and tight as possible, for the fragrance is lost very rapidly if exp d to the atr. Keep your tea in a dark place and never use an old tin can as a container. 1f you can obtain vour favorite kind in bulk, or feel that package tea i& not worth . take care to store it As Sug- gested just as soon as purchased. [t is a good plan to keep a small amount far daily use in a little canister so that the larger container need not be opened too frequently. In making tea measure it carefully. The amount of tea to use depends upon individual taste and the kind and quality you buy. One level tea- spoon for each cup of water is the average amount for English break- fast and oolong. Unless yvou like the beverage very strong allow only half a teaspoon of India and Ceylon tea to one cup of water. Green teas from Japan require from one-half to ons teaspoon to the cup. Use freshly boiling water, as it hae sparkle and fe. Use two earthern pots. both warmed by pouring hot water into them. Steep the tea three to five min- utes in one pot. Never boil. Alwaye strain the infusion from the leaves into the other heated pot. Keep hot, but take care not to boil. The best iced tea is made by pour- ing hot freshly brewed tea over chip- ped ice. When serving a few guests brew the tea in vour regular teapot and then pour ft into individual tall slasses which have been half filled Svith fce. Lemon and sugar should be served with it Tt vou serve iced tea be ve ful what kind you buy, for not all are &pod for icing. Ceylon, oolong and Congous, as well as varfous blends, are sultable for this purpose. If you are not sure of your tea, brew several samples and let cool. Never u one for icing which grows milky upon cooling. _Another Jolt to History. From the Worcester Telegram.
