SAN IG irls May Swim, Not Pose, in Natty One-Piece Attire Special Dispateh to The Star. CHICAGO, May 23.—Woman swim- mers about Chicago are ‘entitled to dress for swimming. But in that event they must swim, not pose on the beaches. That is the ultimatum todhy of Walter C. Wright, city director of the bathing _ proper- ties. The 1923 mermaid, now get- ting ready to be- come the real at- traction all along the lake front, will be made wel- come with more freedom and less clothes than ever before. \But the attitude of Mr. Wright promises little comfort for the beach vamp. For, although he offi- " |clally has raised the bam, and with it the trunks and skirts, a few de- sirable inches above last year's dead lne, yet with this concession granted the ‘fair swimmer he has coupled an unalterable restriction—that her siren song be sung from the waves and not from the sands of the shore “It is fair enough that the swim mer should be hampered with as lit- tle clothing as possible,” explained Mr. Wright, as he allowed an athletic Undine to snip three inches from her last summer's suit. “But if she eomes to swim, she must swim, and | not spend the day posimg on the beach, and I want %his understood before the season begins. “After all, §t {sn't the costume, but the one who wears it, who has made our beaches subject of criticism. The girl who comes to swim, and not sun herself on the beach or demonstrate her good figure, is modest in the most abbreviated of suits. It is for the other type of girl, the beach vamp, that the rules have been made. And this is the girl we are going to weed off the beaches altogether, if possible.” icover.
