BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. . NEW YORK, April 21.—Foreign bonds were firm In an otherwise dull and reactionary market today. Trad- ing was on a small dcale during the two hours of business, Naturally enough it was the specu- lative bonds that lost the most ground, the decline being a reflection of the weakness in stocks. Such is- sues Seaboard Air Line fs were in supply. It is in bonds like these that speculation has centored fn tie last few weeks. The Seaboard's earn- ings have shown consistent improve ment and on the basis of the Febru- ary statement it is estimated that charges, including interest on the ad- Justment bonds, will be covered this year. Other speculative moved Irregularly. In bonds of higher grade there were fractional declines. There was little change in the high-gkade bonds, and liberties were quiet and stead. Among the foreign ponds French 8s and French 7%s equaled their high of Friday and then reacted slightly. Czechoslovakia 83 sold a little below the high of yesterday. Mexican bs advanced. CHICAGO, 111, April 21.—Excessive stocks of foreign butter caused the domestic butter market to become very weak this week. ' Prices broke sharply to a new low level for the season. Trading was marked by frantic selling on the part of those who had a surplus and indifference on_the part of buyers. Efforts to find a level where the consumptive demand' would be suffi- ciently increased to absorb the cur- rent receipts were regarded as the cause of the declines during the week. From a statistical standpoint it was rather difficult to understand 'the weakness. Production showed only slight increases and the receipts at the four markets did not show in- creases that might indicate such a sharp break. Withdrawal from stor- age was small. Offerings of a cargo of New Zealand butter, first at New York, where it was refused, and then at_Boston, had a disastrous effect. The butter markets on 92 score stock at the four leading trade cen- ters closed yesterday as follows: Chicago, 4215 31 points. York, 41; loss, ignoints. Boston, loss, 3 points. Dhiladelphia, 44; 3 points. 3 FOREIGN EXCHANGE. April 21, 1923—12:30 p.m. (Quotations furnished by W. B. Hibbs & Co.) Nominal Selling checks, London. pound..... Montreal, dollar. NEW YORK, April 21.—Twenty-five prohibition agents last night raided the “Russian Eagle” cafe in East -57th street, just off 5th avenue. The cafe was operated by Gen. Theodore La- dnisky and several others, who de- clared they were former Russian no- bles. : Fifty men and women in evening dress were in the cafe when the raid- ers entered the establishment. The raid was conducted on a search war- rant after a prohibition agent had previously visited the place on intro- duction as “Count von Myers of Aus- tria.” The agents searched the building from cellar to garret and withdrew when they failed to find any trace of liquor 97% 101% 66 87% 102% 99 9014 90 100% 6% B4y 121% 101% 100 98 86 93 101% 105% 94 108% 105 9% 111% 873 101% 87% 90% 84% 103% 1081 977 100% B4y 121 101% 99% 98 86 93 101% 106% 94 103% 105 97% 111% 87 101% 87% 90%, 844 103% 1081 97% 100% 941, 1021 101 99% 98 86 93 101% 105% 94 103% 104% 97% 111% 8674 101% 87% 90% 8414 1031 108% 974 DEEIE PN T EPOTIACE Y So — BOSTON STOCK MARKET. PHILADELPHIA, April 21.—Forest fires, some of which had assumed serious aspects, were repyrted today from many sections of Pennsylvania. Hundreds of mine workers are fight- ing fires in the hard coal regions. Two fires at Hazleton appeared to be the most extensive, one of them hav- ing reached the city limits before it was turned back. A fanhouse for supplying air for the mines of. the Cranberry Creek Coal Company was destroyed. Officials of the company caused the arrest of a resident. He is alleged to be of un- {sound mind and to have threatened to fire all the mounfains in the Hazle- ,ton region. Pottsville reports two fires, one on Broad mountain and the other south of Tremont. The Broad mountain blaze burned within 600 feet of the village of Brickton before it was diverted. Nearly 500 men, mostly miners, are battling the flames. One were destroyed in the South mountain near Dillsburg, York county, last night. Johnston reports a fire 'which ha: burned over 300 acres, and is spreading rapidly. Other fires are at Heshben, Indiana county, and Mineral Point and Flinton, Cambria county. Just Breaking the Hoodoo.
