Miss. ELIZABETH HUGHES. School girl daughter of the Secretary of State and Mrs Hughes. $pending the Spring inWashington. Social Air of Capital Sprightly in Spite of | White House Absences Unique Cabinet Reception at Amaryllis Show and Wedding Reception of Miss Hinckley Among Events of Week. SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. HAT Washington can show a sprightly air through the spring| season, with its executive branch of society greatly dis- rupted through absence, was quite plainly shown last week. Mrs. Henry C. Wallace and Miss Wallace, wife and daughter of the Secretary of Agriculture, showed the official world a new mode in cabinet receptions, holding a charming little fete in one of the glass show houses of the departm re were installed more than a thousand amaryllis in a wealth of bléssor The wedding reception of Miss Gladys Hinckley and Mr. McCerney-Werlich called together the social clans at noon yes- . and, of cours one who could get so much as standing in the Playhouse, on N strect, to witness the three one-act plays e benetit of Child Wel Society ay night and last night, was even S. WALLACE gave a number of guests a decided innovation irom the ordinary cabinet day at home in the reception at the amaryllis show when she received Mrs. Hughes and other ladies of the cabinet, a number of other women from official society and the ladies of the Central Ameri- itingent of the diplomatic corps. It was a charming innovation from the usual tea, with every detail carried out in the same marnner in cach home throughout the season. Mrs. Wallace and her daughter met th to the flower house and walked 1 ween the rows of blossoms. foliowir the footsteps of Mrs. Edwin Meredith in z the benefit the interesting work carried on in the de- partment not only in the wonders of the botanical world, but in the field of experimental cookery, giving from time to time small luncheon parties in the department of hygiene. can c heir guest entrance ith then Wa others informally at the d dowr 1arrow s bet \ ceis vi of 'OMORROW night the minister of Bolivia and Senora de Ballivan will entertain in honor of the Italian ambassador, Prince Caetani, and Monday night, being New Year eve in Persia, the Persian minister, Mirza Hussin Kahn Alai, will celebrate by giving a dinner in honor of the Sec- retary of State and Mrs. Hughes, who are resuming their social life after several weeks’ retirement on account of illness. The minister of Ecuador and Mme. Elizalde are entertaining a big company at dinner Tuesday night at the Chevy Chase Club. Thursday night the minister of Poland and Mme. Wroblewska will entertain at dinner, and that night Mrs. Charles Wetmore has invited a dinner company to meet the ambassador of Japan and Mme. Hanihara. There are other important dinners of the week, but most interesting of all will be that in honor of the Secretary and Mrs. Hughes with the Persian minister as host. Each guest will re- ceive a little gold coin, a package of rice and wheat, symbolic and con- veying the wish for prosperity for the coming year. Every feature will be symbolic of spring. - The festival will last for thirteen days, in which time there will be constant hospitality at the legation, N event which carries an underlying current of interest will be in the afternoon reception to be given by Mrs. Thomas F. Walsh and Mrs. John Allan Dougherty in the home of the former, Monday, April 2, for the ambassador of Japan and Mme. Hanihara, when official and resident society, with the greater part of the diplomatic corps, will be guests. For Mrs. Dougherty there is a harking back to the delightful days of her iife spent in the orient, when her husband, the late Capt. John Allan Dougher naval attache of the embassy in Japan, zmi)also for some time in China. In the social life ‘of both capitals they had hundreds of friends, and among them the present ambassador to this country from Japan, An event of a different nature, since Mrs. Dougherty has conse- crated the greater part of her life to philanthropic work, will be in the concert and ball to be given at the New Willard Hotel the night of April 6 by the twenty-five American Legion posts in Washington, for the bene- fit of yeterans’ families living in the District. Mrs, Dougherty has charge of the boxes. 'ASHINGTON’S sprightliest—sportsmen call it the snappiest—spring ball will be on April 12, at the New Willard, when the annual polo ‘ball will take place. There will be the usual sportsmanlike features, with some quite catchy additional ones for this ball, and the polo players of this and other cities will dance in their polo togs, while the decorations will suggest every equipment used on the field. In fact, the ball will be a real sporting event, and interested in it is the entire social world of the capital, ANOTHER noval entertainment will be in-the Russian village fair, to be held at the Wardman Park Hotel April 10, for the benefit of Russian refugees.
