Lleut. Lester J. Maitland, who won ®econd honors in the Pulitzer speed races held at Detroit last October, will leave the fleld Tuesday for Fairfield, Ohio, where, be- fore the end of March, he will at- tempt to beat the airplane speed rocord established by Sadi Lacointe of 233.01 miles an hour. Lieut. Mait- land will pilot the same Curtiss racer in which he whizzed ~ around the course at Self- ridge Field, Mich., last October. At the same _time, Lieut. R. L. Maug- han, who took first honors in the Pulitzer race, will also pilot a Curtiss plane in an attempt to beat the Frenchman's record. Lieut. Maitland is very optimistic over this coming event and said ve: terday that after Lacointe’s record h: Dbeen beaten, both he and Lieut. Maug- han will race over a_three-kilometer course, which from the first of April on becomes the international distance over which future speed tests must be held. The one-kllometer course will be abolished on the 31st of March, but the two officers hope to regain the record for this distance, which was taken away from Gen.
