PAYS THE PENALTY - FOR SLAYING CHILD * Pennsylvania Man Electro- cuted for Crime Committed in April, 1920. BELLEFONTE, Pa, March Floyd Smith of Bradford county, P: was electrocuted at the Rockview penitentiary today for the slaying of his Infant child in South Waverly. Ta, in April, 1920. Ha was led to the chair at 7:08 am. and was pro- nounced dead at 7:17 by Dr. Robert M. Campbell, the prison physician, after three contacts. Continuous efforts since he was sentenced in February, 1921. had been made to save Smith from the electric chair, and until almost the last moment he was hopeful that Gov. Pinchot would interfere. Smith recelved seven respites, one within four hours of going to the death chair. His case was carried to the highest court in the state and last week the board of pdrdons refused a commutation of sentence. Makes No Confession. Smith was accompanied to the death chamber by the Rev. George L. Courtney, the prison chaplain. He was composed and made no confes- sion. He maintained to the end that he did not wilfully kill the child. The body will be sent to Smith's relatives in Bradford county. The child Smith was accused of killing was born a few months after his marriage. According to Smith, he started out at night to abandon it. Near a farmhouse in the vicinity of his home, he said, a dog barked and, in attempting to run away, he fell upon the child, orushing it to death. Fearing he would be charged with murder, Smith said, he placed the body in a creek in South Waver- |- e wsa arrested at Binghamton, JEWS BEATEN, STABBED, Member of Law Cabinet Beaten In Bye-Election By the Assoclated Press.
