rao Penngylvania‘ Society to Honor Dr. Penniman Dr. Josiah H. Penniman, who was elected last week to the office of pro- vost of the University of Pennsylva- mia, will be guest of horor of the Pennsylvania Soclety of the District of Columbia at its meeting in the ballroom of the New Wiliard Hotel, Friday evening, January 26. This will be University of Pennsyl- ‘vania night and an occasion for the assembling'of all Washington Alumni of the Keystone institution, which is ©one of the oldest in the United States. Dr. Penniman graduated from the university in 1890 as a doctor of philosophy. He was dean of the facul- ty from 1897 to 1909. and vice pro- vost from 1911 until her recent elec- tlon as provost. His speech here will be the first public address since he ‘was made head of the university. Dr, Penniman will be introduced by Dr. Leo S. Rowe, president of the University Association of Washington and dlrector general of the Pan-American Union. The musical program will be_ furnished by the quartet of the University Musical Club. After the program there will be dancing, with music by the Keystone Orchestra. In the reception line will be Dr. and Mrs. Josiah H. Penniman, Representa- tive and Mrs. Clyde Kelly, Dr. Leo S. Fort Humphreys Dance Scores Another Success Another successful dance was add- ed to the series being given this| season at Fort Humphreys on the occaslon of the masquerade which took place there Friday night under the auspices of the officers and ladies of the post. In the recelving line were Col. and | Mrs. Woodruff, Col. and Mrs. Kelly| and Maj. and Mrs. Thomas. Lieut. Harlow was chairman of the floor committee. The hall was turned into a fairy- land by the unusual decorations of lanterns and masks, in addition to the conventional palms, and when filled with the dancers in thelr gay and varled costumes made a picture that will long be remembered by those who were present. Prizes were awarded for the best costumes. Mrs. Gams, who wore a harem costume, was winner of the first prize; Mrs. Woodbury, who was in a Russian costume, won the sec- ond prize. Mrs. Perry Brown, as a Turkish lady; Mrs. Earle Tanner, as a gypsy. and Mrs. Dorst, as a Hawalian dancer, attracted much favorable comment. * Lieut. Whitaker and Lieut. Griffith, as Bill and Al, charac- ters from the French cartoons dur- ing the world war, won the first prize among the men for their cos- tumes. Maj. Fleming and Capt. Moses, as wooden soldiers, the second prize. Capt. Skerry, who appeared as Jiggs, was one of the Interesting figures at the dance.
