Beven or eight vears ago B hop Lawrence of Maseachusetts was con- vinced that the self-respect of the clergy of the church demanded that the aged ministers should have some kind of consideration. Hence, under the direction of his church, he led the creaton of a church pension sy tem, and in o doing called for $5,00¢ 000 to start the fund. Instead of $5,000,000, more than $8,500,000 was Becured. Today, after five years of active service, the church pension fund has a reserve of more than $14, 000,000, and is paying out to beneficia- ries more than $400,000 a year. A long experience in the ministry has led the bishop to feel that the next strategic point in strengthening the church is in the bringing into the ministry young men of devotion. force and leadership. Bo he is heading a nation-wide movement to add $1,000,- 000 to the cndowment fund of the Episcopal Theological School in Cam- bridge, a school which has been emi- nently successful in turning out; leaders for the ministry. He has stated that in doing this he is not in- terested merely in raising a sum_of money for the Theological School, but he is concerned that the American people be given a new idea of the ministry as a calling which demands the best efforts the most vigorous and | able young men can give to it. The church nceds a rejuvenated and revitalized ministrv, and {t must start the process of getting it by inducing the best young men fo go into the| service. The strengthering of the Episcopal Theological Sch%:! in Cam- bridge, which is affiliated w'th Har- vard and has_the same high standards as the Harvard graduate schools, is a atep in the right direction. - The need for increasing facllities for the best ministerfal training for the best young men is not confined to the Episcopal Church, but is a matter for the consideration ' of denomina- fons. This movement within the Episcopal Church should be but the beginning of a raising of standards and a strengthening of preparation far the ministry all along the line. WOMAN'S SOCIETY TQ MEET.
