Dick- erson. Deploring the drug habit, which is showing alarming increases through- out the country, Dr. D. G. Dickerson of the United States public_health service told the public health com- mittee of the Washington Board of Trade that there were more than 1,000 drug addicts in the National Capital. Various types of drugs—cocaine, morphine and heroin—are easily ob- tainable in Washington, according to the 8peaker, who said that every ef- fort should be made to fight the con- stantly growing army of addicts. The war is blamed by Dr. Dicker- son for the spread of this pernicious evil. He pointed out that many Americans lived in Burope and fought in Europe, and that many of them acquired the use of drugs for stimu- lation in those trying times. Approximately ‘one million drug users now live in the United States, said the speaker, and the number is increasing. Reglstration of all known addicts and_severe prison sentences for all offenders were among the remedies suggested for th curing of this evil DEATH RECALLS KIDNAPING. NEW YORK, December 20.—The famous Charlie Ross kidnaping case has been recalled by the death of Al- bert Van Brunt, seventy-three years old, in his Brooklyn home. Years ago Mr. Van Brunt shot and wounded fatally two men who were trying to break into his home. Old residents say that the two, on their death beds, confessed they had kidnaped Charlie. The missing boy never was found. JAIL BURNS 5§ NEA RDEATH.
