C. AUTO LICENSES Tags May Be Obtained Up to Janu- ary 1, According to Latest Announcement. ‘Wade H. Coombs, superintendent of licenses, sald todsy that he would not recommend an extension beyond January 1 of the time limit for ob- taining automobile tags. Although December ia now half over, only 19,000 new tags have been sold; which is only a small percent- I‘e of the total number that will e to be issued. ln order to avoid congestion and a long walting line of applicants, Mr. Coombs is now maintaining two of- %\ DRY LAW TRIALS 10 BE SPEEDE Judge Hardison CIear§ Decks for Action by Dismissing Five Cases. However, if 40,000 or more car own- ers walt until after Christmas to get their 1923 tags, as now seems appar- ent, there is likely to be a jam despite the efforts of the superintendent. Mr. Coombs today appealed to all All Witnesses and Defendants Must Be on Time or Take Con- sequences. Speeding up of trials of defendants charged with violation of the na- tional prohibition law has been deter- mined upon by Judge Robert Hardison jof the United States branch of Police ('nurl. The docket of untried cases, which from week to week is accumu- lating in velume, is to be cleared by prompt triala, the judge has decided. He sprung a surprise on Assistant District Attorney Frank J. Kelly, handling the whisky cases, by dis- missing from the trial docket five cases in rapid succession, for want of prosecution. Judge Hardison did this, he stated from the bench, because the cases had been on the docket for some time, had been continued for one or another reason and the gov- ernment had failed to have its wit- nesses ready for trial Lays Down Rulen. Judge Hardlson laid down a set of rules, which, he said, must be observ- ed by government prosecutors, at- torneys interested in the cases. bonds- men and defendants, and which he! warned he would enforce rigidly. He pointed out the necessity of the gov- | ernment sending out summonses for '/ witnesses sufficient!y in advance of trials to enable them to be served. This rule, he sald, would apply to the | government and attorneys and de- | fendants allke. He insisted that surety bondsmen have the defendants in court at the time their cases were scheduled on| the docket and keep them there un-| til the cases are elther tried or other- wise disposed of. If defendants and | witnesses cannot be brought in on the regular summonses, the court said. then attachments must- be is- sued. He pointed out that failure to do these things would result in case: being dismissed for want of nros tion. and if defendants are not in |, court when their names are called, then the surety bonds will be for-' feited. The action of the court evidences' that Judge Hardison intends to give the law enforcement officers hearty co-operation in the prompt trial of all cases that are made by the police and revenue officers.
