BY COMMANDER STANFORD C. HOOPER, U. 8. N. (Copsright, 1922.) Although static disturbances have now viriually ceased for the time be- ing, mysteriously «'sturbing inter- ferences somewhat similar to atmos: pherics occasienally manifest them- selves in radio recelvers during the winter months. This form of interference is fre- quently caused, not by static, but by “leaky” insulators on nearby electric power lines. No assurance can be given by any one that static will not suddenly manifest itself at any time and within any area, but as a constant and uni- versal nuisance it has now virtually disappeared, and as such it will not again return until April. Radio fans of the past and previous summers are familiar with the char- acteristic dlsturbances produced b: this annual but unwelcome visitor, a are also radio operators. They are quick to detect the differing charac- teristic noises of other disturbances, Ssuch as those produced b her waves radiated into space as a re- sult of insulators on nearby high tension power lines defective. - They will not realize what is caus- ing these disturbances, however, will they know what action should be taken to remedy the difficulty. As & matter of fact, nothing what- ever can be done by the radio fan or the radio operator with respect to his receiving outfit. ' spend large sums of money, a good portion of which is for inspecting the lines, especlally with respect to the condition of the insulators. It is not always an easy matter for the inspectors to detect insulators which have become defective by the usual methods employed. ‘Their présence s automatically denoted by the functioning of radio, however, and radio apparatus may bhe employed to locate the individual leaky units. Radlo fans may assist the power companies in maintaining their lines in good condition as well as decreas- ing_interference in the ether by re- porting the prevalence of disturb- ances to their representatives, as the Navy. has done on numerous occasions. A specific instance will be cited which may be regarded as typical and which eutlines the methods employed by the Navy radio and power comp- any.
