" 857 000 BOND LIST SHOWED A STEADIER TONE BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. By Special Leased Wire to The Star. NEW. YORK, September 23.—The bond market was generally steady during the two hours of trading to- day. In the foreign department French issues sold around yesterday’s closing prices. United Kingdom 5%s of 1937 were up fractionally, apprehension over the situation in the near east having abated somewhat. City of Copenhagen 5%s were lower. At 91 they were off 213 points from the high of the week. Probably the banking troubles in Denmark were partly responsible. ‘This bond is very attractive among foreign issues in that beginning July. 1925, it is redeemable for the sinking fund by lot at par. Liberties were ir- regular. Cane Sugars Weak. Among domestic issues the Cuba Cane 7s and 8s were both lower. As far as known there was no particular reason for the weakness in the gen- eral sugar situation. Chile Copper 7s were higher again in response to the activity in the stock. Nassau Electric 4s continued their advance, which has been a con- spicuous: feature of the traction is- sues of late. Presumably good prog- ress toward reorganization Is fore- casted. Federal Financing. Today's: unofficial reports from Washington were that the proposed new long-term government issue would carry & coupon rate of 4% per cent instead of 4 per cent, as was at first suggested. It was also stated that the total issue would be $50,000,000. The most important of the new issues was the $3,000,000 Province of Alberta 58, non-callable for two years, offered at a price to yleld 5.10 per cent. In the New York market for Cana- dian bonds the public utilities and in- dustrials were the leaders this week. Some of these issues advanced three or more points. \ provincials were listless. a5y BAR SILVER QUOTATIONS.
