By thé Associated Press. LONDON, August 17.—The funeral of Viscount Northcliff solemh - ized at noon today in Westminster Abbey. Seldom has the last tribute to any Engliishiman whose position lly personal and unofficial such an assembly. The dean of Westminster undoubt- edly expressed the public wish whei he asked Lady Northcliffe to per- mit the rites to be celebrated in the 'abbey. The great company of emi- nent people gaghered within the famous edifice as well as the crowds of humbler ones in the streets outside gave testimony of this. The service was arranged by Canon Carnegle! The opening sentences of the burial service, “I am the resur- rection and the lif were sung in procession to Croft's music, followed by the psalm “Lord, Thou hast been our refuge. Corinthians, 15:51, “Behold, 1 shew you.a mystery.” Then, following two hymns, the service was concluded with a sixteenth century prayer. Buried ta Finckley. The *Dead March in Saul” was played, and, as the procession left the abbey, Chopin’s funeral march. ‘The funeral procession wound its way to St. Marylebone cemetery in Finchley, a northwestern suburb of London. The American ambassador, George Harvey, was among the host of mournere, chief of whom were the widow,* Viscount Northcliffe’s aged mother and sjx brothers, namely, Vis- count Rothermere, Cecil B. Harms- worth, Sir Robert Leicester Harms- worth and Hlldebrand Aubrey, St John and Vyvyan George Harms- worth. Other near relations and mem- bers of the household staff were pres- ent. Diplomats attending, besides "Am- bagsador Harvey, included the French ambasggdor, the Serbian minister, the Rumsfflan charge d'affaires, Colonial Secretary Winston Spencer Churchill and P. C. Larkin, Canadian high com- missiener; Sir Joseph Cook, Austra- lian commissioner; Premier Squires ot Newfolindland and other promi- nent colonialg. Others present were Sir John Knill, acting lord mayor of London; the di- rectorate of the Times and the allied Northclifie publications and repre- sentatives of all the London news- i papers, news organisations, printing and distributing agenciew, prominent among whom were Vis- count Cowdray, Viscount Burnham, Lord Waring., Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, Baron Stuart of Wortley, Sir Thomas Lipton and Rudyard Kip- Ung. 7 Hours before the time set for Lord Northeliffe's funeral throngs of people. including many Americans, gathered along the streets leading to the late publisher's residence in Cariton Gardens. Throughout the morning there was a steady stream of distinguished vistors and near relatives of the famfly. Floral offerings from all over the world were 8o numerous that the rooms of the Northcliffe home re- sembled a hugeMower garden. There were many wreaths from represent tives of American newspapers, ness and vic organizations and friends of the deceased. There were scores of floral tokens from the staffs of the various publica- tions with which Lord Northcliffe was identified. Many of these were in- scribed simply “To Our Chief.” One of them was a huge vacant chair of roses from the night staff of the Daily Mail. Another was a mass of flowers in the form of a closed book from the day setaff, bearing the lines from Longleffow's “Psajin of Life” ‘begin- ning: “Lives of great men all re- trades mind us.” Most conspicuous of all the floral offerings perhaps was a_magnificent ‘broken column of white flowers from the directors of the Associated News- papers. Ambassador Harvey interrupted his vacation in Scotland to be present at the funeral ceremony. He was accom- panied by Consul General Robert P. Skinner and Post Wheeler, counselor to the American embassy. Lady Northcliffe, who has shown splendid fortitude in the face of Wer great loss. has been deeply touched by the constant stream of messages of condolence from the Unfted States and Canada. She asked the Assoclated Press today to convey her profound appreciation of these expressions of thoughtfulness and generosity. MOURNING BLACK g R CARMACK DRY CLEANING CO.
