Regardless of claims made by a church organisation that such enter- 'lalnmenls are ruinous to the morals of Ime young, and that the present dem- onstration will be the last of its kind to be held in the community, more than 500 persons attended the opening of the eleventh annual carnival at Mount Rain- { ler Monday night. The carnival will be held continuously until September 4. on against these annual gatherings by the Community of Brotherhoods, and while unable to stop the present car- | aival after a spirited meeting held sev eral months ago, leaders in the move- ment to close them declare they will place a candidate m the coming race for mayor whose platform will oppose the annual carnival, which has always been sponsored by the town itself. Many attractions have been installed for the affair, including booths on both sides of the carnival ground, a new dancing pavilion, and other fea- tures usual at such entertainments. The booth of the Mount Rainier vol- unteer fire department is the only one whose revenue does not go to the town, the profits being devoted to the organization itself for fire equip- ment. The town gives nothing to the department, and receipts from the annual carnival are its sole means of support. according to Assistant Chief Louis Hofer. In addition to the “prettiest girl” contest, which is claimed will make this year's carnival a banner one, hairman Guy Parson has announced that he expects to have Tommy Mur- ray and “Spotty” Harvey, Washington sntertainers, as added afttractions. —_— about 300 species of plants out of exist A concerted action has been carried | During the half million or more |$ years that man has inhabited the |§ carth. he has learned to cultivate only | § more than 100,000 that are known to | s £ STAR, WASHINGTON, * Monday the boys visited the Tuber- culosis Hospital. ~After the distribution at the Washington Asylum Hospital Community House went for a straw hay wagon.
