For silence then my spirit pants; it is the balm that heals; and I'd be glad i if all my aunts would cut out foolish spiels. But they've a dozen tales to tell to make me stand aghast, of piffling mishaps that befell since I was with them last. They see the | | ghastly sweat of grief upon my pal- i1id brow, but they won't make their | stories brief or any rest allow. I'm wearied by the beastly grind, I'm jaded and dis- traught, and I have problems in my lmmd that call for gpber thought. And all the females of my house, my aunts and nieces nine, are chirp- ing round like startled grouse,-and wrench this heart of mine. Georgetown “Students Get - Warm Welcome in Mexico Special Correspondence of The Btar. MEXICO CITY, Mexico, July 3 (by mail).—A warm and cordial reception by officials and the population of four Mexican cities, including the capital, was extended to the thirty-seven stur dents of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service of Washing- ton, D. C., on their arrival In this coun- try. The party, which s in charge of Dean Roy S. MacElwee of the school, made stops at Progresso and Merida, capitals of Yucatan and Vera' Crus, prior to their arrival here July 2. Leaving Mavana, €ubey. June 28, on the Ward llner Morro Castle, which brought them from New York, the stu- dents landed on Mexican soil at Pro- gresso the following day, whére they were niet by the American consul. After a short visit around the city, the stu- dents were piled in a special car added to the railroad train aund taken to Merida, thirty miles away: The scen- ery virtually throughout the trip was composed of henequin, from which sisal and hemp are made. 'The journey was welcomed by the students if for no other reason than it was a rellef from the 100 degrees temperature at Proy gresso. Sail for Vera Cruz. Arriving at Merida. the party was taken on a sightseeing tour in queer- looking hacks, drawn by small Mexican horses, and was given luncheon at the Gryan' Hotel, where reporters from Merida papers visited them, along with photographers. The Georgetown boys had planned on a visit to the Aztec ruins, a few miles away from Merida, but time would nat permit. They re turned to Progresso an for Vera Cruz, arriving there Juls 1. The party found Vera Cruz about as hot as Progresso, with the result that the bathing beach and other wet places were extremely popular. They | remained in Vera Cruz until the morr- ing of July 2. when they left for this city in a special Pullman car. “Phe trip by train to the capital was through a beautiful agricultural coun- try with tropical fruit trees, such as mangos, mameys. papayas, oranges and four different kinds of bananas in abundance. Rall Engineering Marvel. i Two hours out of Vera Cruz the train began to ascend the plateau of Mexico City. The railroad up the mountains was the source of much | comment among the students, who unanimously characterized it a “mar- velous piece of engineering, crossing bottomless ravines, passing through numerous tunnels, clinging to the steep sides of the mountains, twisting and turning in every direction, and always ascending.” Everywhere were ragged peaks with the snow-clad glant Orizaba dominating them. The train made a stop of ten min- utes at Cordobo, a town of 10,000 in- habitants in the center of thé coffee district and which was fouhded -in 1618 by the Spaniards. Shortly out of Cordobo. the train crossed Mettac bridge, another “wonderful engineer- The bridge is 350 feet long, is built on_a curve of 325 feet radius and has a 3 per cent grade. Another stop was made at Orizaba, emade by a representative of a city of 48,000, at an altitude of .028 feet. Upon reaching the highest point on the line, at Sojtepec, at an altitude of 8,333 feet, the' train .began a descent of 986 feet to Mexico City. All along this route is a district where tfe “maguay” piant is grown, from which is made “pulque,” the most potent and powerful Mexican drink. The Georgetown party arrived at Mexlico City at 8:30 p.m. and was met by Mexican officials, who extended them a warm welcome. They were then taken in taxicabs to their home on “Calle Generale Prim,” all ar- rangemonts having been previously th United States Veterans' Bureau, who had preceded the party two weeks. Immediately after their arrival, the American consul brought them mail from home. The party is conveniently located and every one is well pleased. The summer course of the University of Moxico will soon be under way, where the students will pursue studies of languages, foreign trade and other subjects.
