CHEER 100-YEAR-OLD FORMER CONGRESSMAN ON FLOOR OF THE HOUSE | The House arose ycsterday and applauded _vigorously for several minutes Cornellus Cole of Cali- fornia, 100 years old and formerly a member of both House and Senate. Uncle Joe Cannon, himself eighty-seven years old and about to retire from Congress with the record of having served longer than any man in Congress, in- trotuced Mr. Cole to the House and made a speech eulogizing his services. Mr. Cole responded briefly in appreciation of the honor. He was a member of the House during the civil war and accom- panied Lincoln to Gettysburg, when he went to make his famous speech. Representative Cannon had read into the record of the House the official biography of Mr. Cole, which shows that he came to Con- gress in 1863 as a member of the House and in 1867 was elected to the Senate, where he served -until 1873.
