SHARES SOFT, MOTORS AGT WELL By Specisl Leased Wire to The Star. NEW YORK, June 7.—The short covering and moderate commission house buying caused a steady open- ing on the curb exchange today. But after some advance at the start, realizing sales again developed and the market resumed its reaction, the | ofl_shares leading. The pressure was greatest against the Standard oils because these were the ones which had had the big rise last month. Some of the members of this group dropped several points before encountering support sufficient to check the decline. The particular weak _spots were Standard of Indlana, Standard of Kentucky. Standard of New York and Imperial Ol of Canada. International Petroleum was sympathetically heavy, but Anglo-American Oil was an ex- ception, advancing while the others were going down. Mexican Seaboard. Unusual interest attached to the trading in Mexican Seaboard issues on account of the sale of Sinclair Oil interests in the property. To pay for the Sinclair holdings, a banking syn- dicate announced this morning a new issue of 200,000 voting trust certifi- cates. These were introduced at once to the dealings and throughout the day sold at & point to a point and a half below Mexican Seaboard stock, al- though the new Issues are on an equal plane. ‘There were fractional losses in the independent oils, such as Mutual, Skelly, Carib Syndicate and Fensland. Skelly made no response as Phillips Petroleum did on the big board to the rumors of a deal between the two companles. Motor stocks were in fair demand following a similar movement on the stock exchange. Durant was the main feature, reaching a new high. Lincoln, Hudson and Daniels were all stronger, but Reo, after an early rise, encountered considerable profit tak- ing. North American Steel did better, but Tobacco Products when issued, after gaining some ground at the start, ylelded later. Amalgamated Leather weas some- what weak and Libby, McNeil and Libby went lower. — state of Colorado § per cent highway bonds. 6 Steel Stocks Gain, Aside from a dozen or so of the special issues, the market was dull. In fact, for three-quarters of the list it was the most uninteresting day in a long time. Evidently the trading element was puzzled over the true position, for the pools in the absence of the outside following ich they had hoped for were much less aggres- sive. The featurs of the afternoon was sharp upbidding of the steel merger stocks under the lead of the new North American Steel when issued on the curb. This was the natural rebound fol- lowing the hasty acceptance of specu- ulative Wall street on previous days that the opposition of the Federal Trade Commission seriously threaten- ed the consummation of the two big combinations of independent steel companies. 5 The truth simply is that the merger negotiators are being called upon to explain to the federal authorities that they are acting within the law as they fully believe they have been, Sterling Steady, $4.50. Nothing of consequence happened in the foreign exchanges, Sterling sold most of the day around $4.50. ‘There were no further reflections in the course of German exchange of the tremendous increases during the week ending 31 in German mote circu- latton, an inorease of over 7,800,000,- 000 marks, S S [ox wew vorx BONISstoex excaance] N, Y. CHICAGO, June 7—Wheat scored & moderate upturn in price today du: ing the early dealings, traders' a tention being given chiefly to relative firmness shown by the Liverpool mar- ket. A dry section which apparently was developing in the spring crop belt attracted considerable notice, however, and so likewise did continued meager- ness of receipts here. Offerings at first were light, and a house with eastern connections led the buying. Initial prices varied from 3% to 1% higher, with July 1.1214a1.13 and Sep- tember 1.12%a1.13%, and were followed by siight further gains. Corn was firmer with wheat. NEW YORK, June 7.—The cotton market opened at an advance of 5 to 16 points on reports of rains in the south, steady Liverpool cables and Wall street and scattered buying. There was also some Liverpool buy- ing of nmew crops, but the advance was soon checked by New Orleans selling and light liquidation. After celling at 20.45 October eased off to 20.35, with active months generally showing reactions of § or 10 points from the best. Futures opened steady—July, 20.50 October, 20.40; December, 20.32; Jan- uary, 20.11; March, 19.9 NEW YORK, June 7.—Wet weather and unfavorable private crop ad- vices failed to inspirs any fresh buy- ing of consequence and the market was quiet later in the morning, with prices showing a tenden: to ease off under scattered liquidation. July sold down to 20.40, or 2 pomts net lower, shortly after midday and sold on about even terms with October, which held a few points above yester- day's closing figures. Later months were relatively steady, showing net advances of some 8 to 10 points. The weekly report of the weather bureau was without any apparent effect on the market. NEW ORLEANS, La., June 7.—The rainy weather over the cotton region combined with favorable cables to put cotton higher today, although the advance was not rapl In the first hour of trading prices were Bent 9 to 14 points higher than the close of yesterday to 20.35 for July. Private official reports indicated that a great deal of rain had fallen in both the eastern and western divisions of the belt, and the moisture was re- garded as being against cultivation of the crop, and favorable to boll weeyl activities. Fulures opened quiet, July, October, 19.85; December, 19. uary, 19.55; March, 19.39. Price movements were narrow for awhile, but toward 11_o'clock there was a sudden bulge, due to buying aroused by the unfavorable tone of the weekly crop reports from the government. July rose to 20.50, at which level the trading months showed gains of 24 to 34 points. The renewal of standing loans which on Monday had been fixed 4% per cent, and on Tuesday at ¢ per cent, was put down to 3 an there was an abundance of funds for use during the day only at 3 per cent The time money market, 100, Wwa easler, although the prevailing qu tation of 43 per cent compared wit the season’s low of 3% a month ag This was another demonstration of the many given this year that when ‘Wall street drops its bid to 3 per ce and keeps it there out-of-town bank« drawn down their balances in quar tities sufficent to bring about an up ward recoil. But it is just as tru. that when in the course of this re action the call money markets get around the § per cent level these out- side funds quickly flow back and force rates down again. Today's softening process was tha more significant in that it occurred despite government withdrawals and that it came, furthermore, Within = week of the income tax payment, which always involves a_considerabl- temporary withholding of money for use in Wall street loans. Did Not Sth ite Market. It could not be said that the low- ering of money rates provided an- fresh stimulus either in the bond or stock market. Liberty 3%8 again made a new higl, and the other United States war loars sold at or very close to par. The general company list was irregular, but somewhat more active. It wis an equally fixed movement on the stock exchange. Railway shares did not respond 1o the $60,000.000 cut in shopmen wages, which followed the $60,000.0: reduction ten days ago in wages « the maintenance of way men. ‘Working Easler. In fact, outside of a few low-price shares in connection with which the: was “merger gossip” the rails wer inclined to work lower. The explans tion lay quite obviously in_the fa that the latest wage cut tad b fully anticipated, while the uncert. ty as to what would come of strike vote was a deterrence to in mediate speculative interests in ra way securities. In the industrial division of tt market there was the now famili extreme confusion in the movemeit individual stocks. Among the « Phillips Petroleum and Cosden bot bettered their previous high figu'« for the vear, Phillips on the prospec of & union with other oil proper and Cosden on high estimates regar ing the present earninzs of the cor pany. Sinclair Consolidated mad response to the sale of ts i in Mexican Seaboard, which bring between $8,000,000 and $9,000.001 cash into the Sinclair traasury. But other members of the oil groap wers as & rule neglected. Copper Steel Lower. Copper shares went down for time, and so did Steel common, bu there was no renewal of the pres- sure against the independent stee Dealings in the latter were restrict-d by the consideration that it will prol- ably be another two months at least before the mergers are passed upon one way or the other by the Federal Trade Commission. Phillips Petroleum was mentioned today as one of the oil companies which was likely to' be the leadins spirit in a merger of several comi- panies in the near future. One the companies to be linked w Phillips is Skelly Oil, in which a lea ing stock exchange house b come actively interested. An an- ) TCiRAiG n nouncement regarding the plans of these two companies is expected soon. Studebaker nnd Maxwell. Buying of Studebaker, which at times was rather conspiclous in day's market, was said to have com from speculative interests that have been identified with all the big moves in the stock. The essential fact in the Maxwell motors situation is that two separate pools are in charge, the one of the A stock and the other of the B stock. The A stock pool is quiescent and the B stock pool active. this is why the B shares have been doing so much better recently in the market. Activity at rising prices in the low-priced Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic stock is due to the discussion of merger possibilities. Either At- lantic Coast Line or Louisville andl Nashville, it is thought, could use tha road. Before the company went ints the hands of & receiver severul years ago the Atlantic Coast Line was sail to be negotiating for it. These gotiations were broken off receivership. —_— SHORT-TERM BECURITIES (Reported by Redmond & Co.) —Noor. by Bid.
