BURGESS. ‘There are times to he suspicious As well as times to trusi Between the two he's wise indeed Who never proves unjust. ohnny Chuck. Johnny Chuck was up very early in the morning. It was one of Johnny's ®ood habits to arise very early. He believes in getting up early and going 1o bed early. He says that is one reason why he is so well and strong ®il the time. As usual he first sat up on his doorstep and carefully looked this way, that way and the other way. No enefdy was to be seen. Johnny at once went over to the patch of sweet clover where he and his family and Peter Rabbit and his family had had boee | HE HURRIED BACK HOME AND HAD DISCOVERED. & party just before shadow-time the night before. Johnny at once began to eat. He is very. fond of sweet clover and he was bungry. He gave no thought to any- thing but filling his stomach. Pres- enyy as he reached out to bite off a leat of clover the hair along his back began to rise and he growled way down deep in his throat. He didn’t take that leaf of clover. His little black nose had discovered an odor that was not the odor of sweet clover. 3 “Reddy Fox was here last night,” muttered Johnny. @iscovered anything: Johnny forgot that he had come out there to eat. He began to sniff all about in that patch of clover, and the more he sniffed the more uneasy he became. You see he kept smelling Reddy Fox. Reddy's footsteps leave a scent just as do the footsteps of the little people whom Reddy hunts. When Johnny had carefully been all over that patch of clover he sat up and once more looked this way, that way and the other way. On his face was a troubled look. In every part of that patch he had found the scent of Reddy Fox. By this he knew that Reddy had spent some time there. “That red rascal must have spent & .lot of time here last night,” mut- “tered Johnny. “That means that he hds found out about the babies. That sharp nose of his found their trails and he spent a lot of time here trying to find out how many of the babies were here. 1 must warn Peter Rab- bit.” Johnny forgot all about eating any more breakfast. He hurried back home and told Polly Chuck what he had discovered. Polly looked wor- ried. “From now on we will have td b4 extra careful.” said Polly. “We mastn’t let one of those babies out of &ight an Instant.” wonder if he Then Johnny sat_on his doorstep | to watch for Peter Rabbit. He didn't have long to wait. Peter also wanted some sweet clover for breakfast and on his way there stopped to say good morning to Johnny Chuc! #I have bad news, Peter,” said J¢hnny. eter looked very sober. “What is 1t he adke “Reddy Fox has found out_about your bables and mine” replied Johnny. “He visited the patch of Eweet clover after our party last night, and now he knows our secret.” “How do you know?" demanded Peter. . “Tve been over there this morning and Reddy left his scedt in every art of that patch of sweet clover. Rhat ‘means that he spent a lot of time_going all through it with that wonderful nose of his. Of course, he found our scent and the scent of the babies,” explained Johnny. Peter sighed. “I'm afrald we are in for a lot of trouble then,” said he. *Ot course, Reddy was bound to find out about the babies sooner or later, dbut 1 wish it might have been latar. 1 almost wish we hadn't had that party last night” (Copyright, 1922, by T. W. Burgess.) LISTEN, WORLD! BY ELSIE ROBINSO! The greatest fault in the modern ®chool is that it offers the child such insidiously pleasant inducements that he quite forgets that he ever wanted to play hookey. And when you elim- fnate a human's hookey urge, you've slenatured his fmmortal soul. When I was a child the schools ‘were 5o uniformly poor that if you had an ounce of sic-'em in your psychology you played hookey auto- jmatically. I remember a glorious morning snooping around a gypsy camp, .learning to skin rabbits and play craps, while my law-abiding cotemporaries struggled through the multiplication table. It was the sevens., 1 never did learn that seven table. I still can't multiply eight y seven—I have to add it. But in rs place I have the memory of sleepy ‘®ucalyptus trees and musiard w 4n blossom, of meadow larks on ry umbling fence and gypsy faces done o red and brown and garlic. I have 80 the memody of the joy of break- ng loose, and many times since I'ved ved my soul alive by the same ex- dient. Tow, of course, I'm not really urg- g little Willle to be a law-breaker, or do I think that Fagan and Bill kes had a better curricilum for outhful Oliver Twists than our fore- ost educators. But I do think that there’'s something about. playing hookey which it were well for adults to_ remember—the breaking away grom conformity, from negative vir- tues, from the smugness of safe pro- ams; the seeking of adventure, gram‘ yourself and taking yourself k; the making of a plan, Jomehow fits w and diavach thay Eu’lt you; being dependast for a little hile on your own {xgenuity for $musement, m-nnc and guldance. These are good things to know. All he great adventurers, scientists, re- ormers, artists, master artisans new them, and learned them by laying hookey _from the social hools of their day. evote s0 uunh time,to learning how be respectabl e, safe, polite and ef- clent—and so lltth learning how to ourselves.
