HINTED BY SPRING METEORS For the past month or six weeks announcements have been made both in the United States and Europe of the unusual number of spring metesrs, or “fire balls,” as they are termed. Only a few days ago a huge fire ball darted across the sky near Athens, Ga. This character of phenomena has already attracted the attention of astronomers as rather unusual at this season of the year. Astromomers generally look for the November meteor showers, but the unusual num- ber of fire balls or shooting stars in the spring season of the year, it seems, 1 ggesting to the profes- sional students and observers of the heavens that there must be something out of the common routine going on in_space around and above us. For thousands of years, long be- fore the dawn of modern astronomy, the shooting star, the meteor shower and fire balls of the heavens have been the subject of the deep and in- teresting research and investigation by the astronomers of all ages, even before the invention of the modern telescope, yét the real nature of this phenomena is probably in as much conjecture and doubt as it was in those centuries. Origin Mere Speculation. The possible terrestrial or celestrial origin of the meteor or fire ball is still a matter of astronomical specula- tion &nd controversy. They are in s for our telescopes, and we never see them or the effects of their motipn except under extraordinary circumstances. - At the time we do notice the meteor it Is moving with ‘such enormous velocity that it often traverses more than twenty miles a second. Such a velocity. is almost impossible near the earth’s surface, the resistance of the alr would prevent it. Far away in the emptiness of space there is no air to impede its flight. It may have been moving around and around the sun for thousands, perhaps millions, of years without suffering any inter- ference. Effect of Atmowphere. In the course of its wanderings the body comes near the earth, and, within a few hundred miles of its surface, begins to encounter the up- per surface of the atmosphere with Wwhich the earth {s inclosed. To a body moving with the appalling velocity of a fire-ball, or meteor, a vlunge into the atmosphere is of course, fatal. Even though the upper layers of air are excessively attenuated, yet they suddenly check the velocity, al- most as & -rifle bullet would be Our Regular $2.00 Silk Hose $1.63 Choice of Onyx, Berkshire, Alwin and other standard makes of pure silk full-fash- joned stockings, and the fa- mous Weldrest tailored silk hose, with wide flat seam. * Plain and satin-stripe kinds.
