C. Situation. Reports from a committee investi- gating the local bread situation in the District featured the open session of the executive committee of the House- keepers' Alllance at the District build~ ing yesterday, with Mrs. F. L. some, president, in the chalr. Summarized, the reports pointed out: “That the wheat crop of the present year holds out no prospect of a serious shortage of flour—although it is 20,- 000,000 bushels under the average crop for the period 1914-1918—because of the drépping off of a great amount of exporting. That a recent interview with W. S, was unsatisfactory, the committee be- ing unable to get direct and exact replies to questions asked. ‘That Mr. Corby was “evasive” in his replies at this interview and that quality of the bread, which was one of the principal topics, did not enter into the Interview in the manner in which the committee desired. In fact, there was nothing ascertained relative to the quality of the bread. That housewives are in urgent need of the knowledge of home breadmaking —as the previous generations knew it —and that a campaign be started to bring this knowledge to the Washing- ton housewives. It wag declded to co-operate with the public press in circulating a question- naire to clear up certain phases of the bread situation as affecting the public of Washington. The committee in the future also will ascertain, if possible, the exact cost of the manufacture of bread in Washington, as well as the cost of delivery and sales. A report of the committee on social hygiene recommended the co-operation of the alliance with other local and national organizations with headquar- ters here, for a fight on disease. —_— ASK INSPECTION OF BOOKS Mandamus Proceedings Instituted Against Canoe Club Officers.
