AN APPEAL TO HER BETTER NATURE, HORNE BLAISDELL was buy- ing a new necktie. An expen- sive one. He was much too old to be vain or his personal ap- Dearance, but he had a luncheon en- gagement with a charming young lady who was rather fastidious about neckties. He had already reserved a table at Sherry’'s and ordered lunch- eon with discriminatio The young lady was the daughter of his dearest friend. a high-spirited young woman, whose youthful hus- band was in throes of distress be- cause she was contemplating accept- g an offer that she had had from a notion picture company. And Thorne Blaisdell, who was the young gentle- man's employer, felt it doubly his duty to make an appeal to the young Wwoman's better nature. He felt that at any cost she must be prevented from “taking what seemed to her friends and family an extremelx un- wise step. She stepped through the entrance demurely aware that she looked an entirely desirable luncheon guest. For she was wearing a charming spring bonnet, poke shaped and gray, from unger whose alluring brim her bronze curls peeped. Her host ob- served as she approached him that she was wearing his own wife's Jux- urious squirrel-skin wrap! ‘Morning, Uncle Thorne,” she cookd sweetly. “Thank you for sending vour car for me. I do love a lushy big lim'.” She sank gracefully into her chair. “Um—I'm starved. I want a flock of big oysters and a yard of rare roast beef and an artichoke and—' ‘Gently, there. 1 ordered luncheon before you came in. jome clam bouillon, a chicken patty. Merriam Lindsay beckoned to the waiter. 'm sorry, but the gentleman made a mistake in the order.” she remarked firmly. “I want Lynnhavens——" “Bless my stars!” her host ejacu- lated. “Whose party is this?" 4 “Mine. First one I've had in ages. I'm crazy about it. You were a peach to ask me. She nonchalantly pow- dered her retrousse nose as though she were_blissfully unaware—which she wasn't—that that sort of thing irritated her host. If she had a gentler, &weeter na- ture, she had most assuredly left it at home. She was positively bristling. Her disconcerted companion. prod- ding desperately at his oysters, be- gan to feel stronge misgivings about the line of argument that he had so glibly assured his wife and Merriam's husband could not fail to prove ef- fective. He was rather glad that he had not confided any details to those persons, merely announced that he was sure he could persuade Merriam to give up all ideas of becoming a motion picture actress. He decided that he would not begin until the dessert.. Merriam causally decided otherwise. “Just what did you want to See about?” she came directly to the point. “You'd better make it snappy, because I have an awfully important engage- ment at three o'clock. I—oh, there's lots of money involved,” she boasted. “I fancy that’s what T want to see you about,” he blurted out. “This con- Tounded motion picture bug of yours! It won't do at all,” he shook his head. “What I'm going to say to you may seem hard but I think you'll see my [T TLE STORIES point. "Wait a minute—I'm older than ; you are and I'we a right to the first inning. ¥m going to ask you not to talk until I've presented my side of the case.” “In the first place, my dear girl, I| much appreciate your ambition, be- cause I know it comes from a laud- able deslre on yaur part to add to an— er— shall we say ‘modest’ income? I know how galiing it is to be what you used to call ‘poor folks.” I know how dazzling the figures that these motion picture men talk about must sound. But even if you made a tremendous success, I want you to stop to think if you wouldn't be paying far.too dear- ly for it. You're a gallant child—" he leaned forward to pat her hand. “I h.a(e to say what I'm going to say now. I'm going to say that I think you've been rather unfair to your husband. Rather impatient with him. You've hurt his pride cruelly. “He's a fine lad and I've taken a keen interest in him. You must be more patient. He's bright chap, but he's a plodder. I can promise you that he has a splendid future before im."” he glowed with delight. “Wasn't 1 the smartie to marry him! There is someghing you must understand clearly. I do not claim that the stand I am forced to take is fair. We will, to avoid argument, admit that it is simply an ultimatum. I issue it because I sin- cerely believe 1t I am acting as I deem your dear father would want me to act. I re- fuse to have, the husbands of any motion picture actresses on my pay roll. So that unless you can give me your word of honor that you will never become a motion picture ac- tress I shall be forced, instead of in- creasing John's salary, to ask him to_leave my employ.” For a full moment she did not an- swer_him. Her lashes trailed against her flushed cheecks, her lips twitched with suppressed emotion. She was fighting hard for composure. He thought of her famous temper and braced himself for the worst. “I'm waiting!” he said sternly. She did not lift her eyes. She stretched out her hand. Her voice is for your good. | 8th . D Another episode of this story in to- morrow’s Star. HbME EcoNoMics. BY MRS. ELIZABETH KENT. l JSrBEDTIME Boxer and Woof Woof Awake BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. The feel of spring is in_the air And joy awakens everywhere. —O0ld Mother Nature. Mother Bear and the half-grown cubs, Boxer and Woot Woof, had spent a very comfortable winter in their den under a great windfall de®p in the Green Forest. They had known nothing about the great ice storm, They had known nothing of the cold and the snow. You see, they had been asleep. They had slept all those weeks without once waking up. Sleep- ing all three together, that way they had been warmer and even more com- fortable than if each had been sleep- ing alone. Boxer and Woof Woof didn’t know it, but this was the last winter that they would sleep together, Shortly after Old Mother Nature started the sap to running up the maple trees she must have whispered in the ears of Mother Bear and the cubs that spring was coming. Any- MOTHER BEAR YAWNED AND STRETCHED AND THEN SHUF- FLED OFF FOR A LOOK AROUND. way, they awoke early one morning. Mother Bear awoke first. For a-long time she lay there trying to make up her mind whether or not to get up and go and see what the weather was like outside. She was a little stiff from her long sleep, and so she s! 1y stretched first one leg and then another to get the stiffness out of them. This awoke the cubs, and they did likewise. Finally Mother Bear decided to look outside. Now, the cubs had no intention of being left behind. They promptly scrambleg to their.feet and followed her out. There was still some snow in the Green Forest, but there were places which were bare. Down along the Laughing Brook the brown and green hoods of the skunk cabbage were already showing. All about were signs of spring. Now, you would suppose that those bears would have thought of their stomachs_the very first thing. Not & thing had they had to eat since they.! went to sleep at the beginning of the winter. But they didn’t think of their stomachs. No, sir, they didn’t think of their stomachs at all. The truth is they were not hungry. They had taken pains to get fat in the fall when the beechnuts and acorns were plentiful, and now they were just about as fat as when they had gone to sleep. The lean time would come later. 4 Mother Bear yawned and stretched and then shuffled off for look around. Boxer and Woof Woof, who all their lives had done just what Mother Bear did, yawned and stretched and shuffied along after her. . In the first place, the soles of their feet were tende: You know they had not used them for a lohg time. Then, too, they were not_fully awake. So after a short walk they returned to the great wind- fall and went back to their bed. The next day they did the same thing over again. but this time they went a little further. So it went on the next day and the day follnwll'.f Each day they remained out a It Some Dining Room Details. l l t [ tion will be accepted at The Star office, 11th st. A silence cloth is a heavy cover made of felt, double-faced canton flannel or some similar material fori the dining-room table. It should Be fastened securely about the table legs or large enough to prevent its slid- ing on the polished surface of the table. This cover protects the table top from hot dishes, improves the ap- pearance of any table cloth, but, above all, it deadens the sound of dishes and silver at the table during a meal. Its value from this point of view for those who are at all sensitive to the rattle and clatter of the business of eating can hardly be exaggerated. 1t is the main argument for lunch and breakfast cloths as against doilies on the bare table, however attractive these may be in appearance. Only three or four adults, themselves weil trained, and served by a skillful maid, can really be comfortable with a bare | table top; where there are children dr the family is large or the maid careless the meal is bound to be too noisy to be pleasant. Tablecloths when ironed should be folded and creased only once, the long way of the cloth. Then they should be rolled, each on its cardboard cylin- der, cut to fit. This makes them look much better when laid on the table, saves creasing when they are removed between meals, and makes them last longer. Tray cloths, doilies, centerpieces ana sideboard covers should ‘also be rolled on cylinders. They take no more space when cared for in this way and are rauch better kept. Stuffed Carrots. Scrape three large carrots, cut off the small ends and then cut them in half lengthwise. Bolil in salted water urtil tender, drain and cool. Scoop odt thé center, leaving & boat-shaped shell. Chop three hard-boiled eggs ard mix them with two cups of bread crumbs, one tablespoonful of lemon Juice, one can of mushrooms, or one-half pound‘of fresh mushrooms chopped and enough milk to moisten. Season with salt, pepper and one tablespoonful of melted butter. Fill the carrot shells with this mixture and bake in a hot oven for about fifteen minutes, or until brown on top. Serve plafh or with a mushroom or white sauce. Carrots filled this way may be used as a meat substitute when served with the sauce. Cheese Canaj Cut the cheese in paper-like thin glh:el and place them on soda crack- rs. Put them in a' baking pan and put them in a hot oven just long enough to melt the cheese. Dust with paprika and serve. & longer. They nibbled at some tender young twigs.- You see, they were just beginning to feel hungry. Sammy Jay discovered them and at once passed the word all through the Green Forest that Mother Bear and the twins were awake. When White- foot the Wood Mouse over in his home in a tall, dead stump heard the news he shivered a little and hoped with all his might that those bears would not come over whers he was. He knew that if they did they would be pretty sure to try to pull over that old stump to see if there was any one in it. Little as a Wood Mouse is, a | hungry Bear will go to a lot of trou- ble to catch him. (Copyright, 1922, by T: W.
