AND EUROPE WARNED OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES Intfoduction of Typhus Fever and Cholera Through Immigration of Russian Refugees Feared. By the Associated Press. BERLIN, March 22.—United States, as well as Central Europe, must be on guard against the introduction of cholera and typhus through im- migration of Russian refugees, says a warning issued today by Dr. Schlesinger of the German Red Cross. Hordes of these refugees are pouring into Germany over the Polish, Let- vian and Esthonian borders, and many are seeking passports to Amer- ica, where they have relatives and friends who are financing them for the journey. Already nearly 50,000 cases exist in Germany, traced to refugees, and German immigrants from the Volga region have been infected. Seventy five per cent of the recent arrivals in the concentration camps were dis- eased, according to Red Cross sta- tistics. “The minister of health has called attention to the necessity of vac- cinating every one arriving from Rus- sia, caclaring that children especially are carriers of typhus. OPERA COMFANY MEMBER STABS HIMSELF AT SHOW CHICAGO, March 22.—A real trag- edy, which occurred behind the scenes and unknown to the audience, brought to a close the'first act of a per- formance of “Pique Ddme” by the Russian Grand Opera Company hese last night. Poward the end of the act a slight 1 commotion behind the scenes dis. turbed & duet by Miss Maria Mashi: sopramo, and Vladimir Daniloff, tenor, | and when Miss Mashir stepped into the ; wings she stumbled over the body of Slava Stankevietz, a member of the chorus. On calling other members the company, it was found Stanke- vietz had attempted to end his life by stabbing himself above the heart with a pair of scissors. Members of the-company could give no reason for the act, bln sald that he had been despondent. The performance was continued after Stankevietz had been removed to'a hospital, where it was said that he might recever.
