He turned on all the lights, took the thing out of its case and stripped off the two sheets of ruled paper wound around the two re- volving drums. He laid them flat on the table and studied them for some minutes with evidently growing sat- istaction. At last he turned to me and sald, “Walter, here is a ghost caught in the act. 1 looked dubiously at the irregular up-and-down scrawl on the paper. while he rang up the homicide bureau of the central office and left word for O'Connor to call him up the first thing in the morning. What I want you to do particularly is to get a good idea of the looks of the room in which she is accustomed to work. I'm going to duplicate it here in my laboratory as nearly as possible. Then I want you to arrange with her for a private ‘circle’ here tomorrow night. ‘Tell her it is with a few professors at the uni- versity who are Interested in psychi- cal research and that Mr, Vandam will be present. I'd rather have her come willingly than to force her to come. Incidentally, watch that man- ager of hers, Farrington. By all means hé must accompany her.” That evening I dropped casually in on Mrs. Popper. She was a woman of great brilliance and delicacy, both in her physical and mental percep- tion: of “exceptional- vivacity and cleverness. She must have studied me more closely than I was aware of, for I believe she relied on diverting my attention whenever she desired to produce one of her really wonder- ful results. Needless to say. I was completely mystified by her perform- ance. She did spirit writing that would have done credit to the immor- tal Slade, told me a lot of things that were true and many more that were unverifiable or hopelessly vague. It was really worth much more than the price, and I did not need to feign the interest necessary to get her terms for a circle in the laboratory. Of course. I had to make the terms with Farrington. The first glance aroused my suspicions of him. He was shifty-eyed, and his face had a hard and mercenary look. 1In spite of, perhaps rather because of, my re- pugnance we quickly came to a&n agreement, and as I left the apart ment I mentally resolved to keep my eye on him. Craig came in late, having been en- gaged in his chemical analysis all that evening. From his manner I in- ferred that they had been satistactory, and I had arranged successfully for the meance, and that Farrington would accompany the medium. As we were talking over the case a messenger arrived with a note from O'Connor. It was written with his usual brevity: “Have just found from servants that Farrington and Mrs. P. have key to Vandam house. Wish I had known it before. House shadow- ed. No one has entered or left it tonight.” Cralg lgoked at his watch. It was a quarter after one. “The ghost won't walk tonight. Walter.” he sald as he entered his bedroom for a much- needed rest. “I guess I was right, atter all, In getting_the capsules as soon as possible. The ghost must have flitted unobserved in there this morning directly after the mald b:ou!hc them back from the drug- & Again, the next morning, he had me out of bed bright and early. As we descended from the 6th avenue “L"” he led me into a peculiar little shop in the shadow of the “L" struc- ture. He entered as though he knew the place well: but, then, that air of assurance was Kennedy's stock in trade and sat very well on him. Few people. I suppose, have ever had a glimpse of this workshop of magic and deception. This little shop of Marina's was the headquarters of the magicians of the country. Levi- tation and ghostly disappearing hands were on every side. The shelv: in the back of the shop were full of nickel, brass, wire. wood, and papier- mache contrivances, new and strange to the eye of the uninitiated. Yet it was all as systematic as a hardware shop. “Is Signor Marina in he asked of a girl in the first room, given up to picture post cards. The room was as deceptive as the trade, for it was only an anteroom to the storeroom I have described above. This storeroom also a factory, and haif a dozen artisans were hard at work in it. Yes, the signor was in, the girl re- plied, leading us back into the work- shop. He proved to be a short man with a bland, open face and frank eyes, the very antithesis of his trade. have arranged for a circle with Mrs. May Popper,” began Kennedy, handing the man his card. “I sup- pose you know her!™ “Indeed, yes,” he answered. nished her s ce room.” ‘Well, I want to hire for tonight just the same sort of tables. cabinets. carpets, everything that she has— onl{ hire, you understand, but I am willing to pay you well for them. She is a good customer. ‘'But her manager——' “My friend here, Mr. Jameson, has with her in her own interposed Craig. “Per- haps he can help you to recollect just what is necessary.” “I know very well, signor. I have the duplicate bill, the bill which was paid by that Farrington with a check from the banker dam. Leave it to_me.” “Then you will get the stuff together this mofning and have it up to my e this afternoon?" Yes, professor, yes. Tt is a bar- gain. I would do anything fer Mrs. Popper—she is a fine woman.” Late that afterncon I rejoined Craig at his laboratory. Signor Ma- rina had already arrived with a truck and was disposing the paraphernalia about the laboratory. He had first laid a thick black rug. Mrs. Popper very much affected black carpets, and T had noticed that Vandam’s.room was carpeted In black, too. I suppose black conceals everything that one oughtn’t to see at x seéance. A cabinet with a black curtain, sev- eral chairs, a light deal table, seve eral banjos, horns and other instru- ments were disposed about the room. ‘With a few suggestions from me we made a fair duplication of the hang- 1 on the walls. - Kennedy was ifestly anxious to finish, and at last it was don After Marina had gone, Kennedy stretched a curtaln over the end of the room fart from the cabinet. Behind it he placed on a shelf the ap- paratus composed of the pendulums and magnets. The beakers and test tubes Were also on this shelf. He had also arranged that the cabinet should be 20 situated that it was next a hallway that ran past his laboratory. “Tonight, Jameson.” he said. indi- cating a spot on the hall wail just back of the cabinet, “I shall want you to bring my guests out here and do a little spirit rapping—I'll tell you just what to do when the time come: That night when we gathered in the transformed laboratory there were Henry Vandam, Dr. Hanson, Inspec- tor O'Connor, Kénnedy and myself. After some time of this sort of work Cralg led gradually up to a reque: for a matdrialization of the control of Vandam, but Mrs. Popper refused. She sald she did not feel strong enough, and Farrington put in a hasty word that he, too, could feel®that there was something working against them.” But Kennedy was importunate. and at last she consent- ed to see if “John” would do some rapping, even if he could not ma- terialize. Kennedy asked to be permitted to put the questions. “Are_you the ‘John' who appears to Mr. Vandam every night at 12:307" Rap! rap! rap! came the faint reply from the cabinet. Or rather it seem- ed to nfe to come from the floor near the cabinet, and perhaps to be a trifle muffled by the black carpet. “Are you in communication with Mrs. Vandam?" Rap! rap! rap! “Can she be made to rap for us?”’ Rap! rap! “Will you ask her spell out her answer?’ Rap! rap! rap! Cralg paused a moment to frame the question, then shot it out point- blank: “Does Mrs. Vandam know now in the other world whether any one in this room substituted a morphine capsule for one of those ordered by her three days before she died? Does she know whether the same person has done the same thing with those later ordered by Mr. Vandam?” “John” seemed considerably per- turbed at the mention of capsul It was a long time before any answer was forthcoming. Kennedy was about to repeat the question when a faint sound was heard. Rap!— Suddenly came a wild scream. Tt was such a scream as I had never heard before in my_life. BURG He proves himself a neighbor tru ‘Who seeks a kindly deed to do. —Old Mother Nature. Occaslonally Timmy the Flying Squirrel came over to visit White- foot the Wood Mouse. 1f Whitefoot was in his house he always knew when Timmy arrived. He would hear a soft thump down near the bottom of the tall stump in which he made his home. He would know instantly that thaf thump was made by Timmy striking the foot of*the stump after a long jump from the top of a tree Whitefoot would poke his head out of his doorway and there, sure enough, would be Timmy scrambling up to- ward him. Whitefoot had grown to admire Timmy with all his might. It secmed to him that Timmy wae the most wonderful of all the people he knew. You see, there was no one of the others who could jump as Timmy could. Timmy on his part enjoved “IT'S NO BUSINESS OF MI SAID TIMMY TO HIMSELF. having Whitefoot for a neighbor. Few of the little people of the Green Forest are more timid than Timmy the Flying Squirrel, but here was one beside whom Timmy actually feit bold. It was such a new feellng that Timmy enjoyed it. So it was that in the dusk of early evening just after the Black Shadows had come creeping out from the Purple Hills across the Green Mead- ows and through the Green Fores these two little neighbors would start out to hunt for food. White- foot never went far from the tall, dead stump in which he was now living. He didn't dare to. He wanted to be where at the first sign of danger he could scamper back there to safety. Timmy would.go some dis- tance, but he was seldom gone long. He liked to be where he could watch and talk with Whitefoot. You see, Timmy Is very much like other peo- ple: he likes to_goasip a little. One evening Whitefoot had found it hard work to get enough to fill his stomach. He had to keep going a lit- tle further and a little further from that old stump. Finally further from it than he been before. Timmy had stomach, tree was watching Whitefoot. Sud denly what seemed like a great Black Shadow floated right over the tree in which Timmy was sitting, and stopped on the top of a tall, dead tree. It was Hooty the Owl, and it was simply good fortune that Timmy happened to see him. Timmy kept perfectly still. He krew that he was safe as long as he kept perfectly still. He knew that Hooty didn’t know that he was there. Unless he moved, those great eyes of Hooty's, wonderful as they ‘were, would not see him. Timmy looked over to where he had last seen Whitefoot. There he was picking out seeds from a pine cone on the ground. The trunk of & tree was between him and Hooty the Owl. But Timmy knew that Whitefoot hadn't seen Hooty, and that any minute he might run-out from be- hind that tree. If he did Hooty would see him, and silently as a shadow would swoop down and catch him. What was to be done? t's no business of mine,” said Timmy to himself. “Whitefoot must look out for himself. It is no_busi- ness of mine at all. Perhaps Hooty will fiy away before Whitefoot moves. I don’t want anything to happen to Whitefoot, but if something does it will be his own fault; he should keep better watch.” For a few minutes nothing hap- pened. Then Whitefoot finished the last seed in that coneé and started to look for more. Timmy knew that in a moment Hooty would see Whitefoot. ‘What do you think Timmy did? He jumped. Yes, sir, he jumped. Down, down, down, straight paat the tre on which_sat Hooty the Owl Timmy sailed. Hooty saw him. Of course. He couldn’'t help but see him. He spread his great wings and was after Timmy in an instant. Timmy struck near the foot of a tree and without wasting a second darted around to the other side. He was just in time, Hooty was already reaching for him. Up the tree ran Timmy and jumped again. Again Hooty was too late. And so Timmy led Hooty the Owi away from Whitefoot the Wood Mouse. (Copyright, 1922, by T. W. Burgess.) —_— Jam Sance for Puddings.
