LONDON, January 31.—Infuenza, which is gripping England and has spread to Americe, is by no means & modern disease. The dread word made its first appearance in Eng- land just before the middle of the eighteenth century, in connection with an epidemlo ague, which per- haps came, llke the word, from Italy. The word is & by-form of “Influence,” which was originally an astrological term for the power or virtue supposed to flow from the planets upon men and things, so in its very origin it suggests something mysterious and prob- ably baleful. The use of the word in England became more general during the epidemic of 1762, and with the severe visitation of 1782 the term became settled and was formally adopted by the College of Physi- cians. A Shropshire parish regis- ter thinks the “disorder” remark- able enough to make a note of in that year, and Lady Sarah Napler (Lennox) in a letter to a friend dated May 29, 1782, says that “so general an illness has never been known here in the memory of man.” She had heard of no fatalities, but it was “horrid troublesome,” and “all billious people are very bad with it” “If it reaches you,” she further advises, “you must get rid of it by swealing or a gentle phisic, and drink wine, for it's of the putrid kind"—an adjective with which many mhy agree, though not in its eighteenth century sense.
