30 Brides Will Be Brides By Lucille Van Slyke. SWEETS TO THE SWEET! T 2 o'clock on a gloomy after- noon in late fall, Merrlam Lindsay found herself feeling distinctly low-minded. For three weary weeks she had been toil- ing at her ‘self-imposed task as fudge manufactuter to a boys' school. And she had discovered that while it might be amusing to make fudse when a fudge mood hit occasionally, fudge as a life work was a very monotonous story. Nene of her usual expedients for cheering herself seemed to help. She tried talking to her dog. “This probably isn't half as hard as what your boss is doing right this minute,” ghe admonished Rags, stern- y. Rags pricked up his ears at the boss” and ran to the door. “No use yet,” sighed Merriam, dole- fully, staring at_the clock. “it's four ghastly hours béfore he comes. She measured out sugar and choco- Jate with hands that trembled. She prided herself that she had the thing to a fine point. By starting separate potfuls cooking at half-hour intervals she was ready to beat each one as the last previous onme cooled. But even with this system, by mid-afternoon she hated the sight and smell of so much sweetness “In fact, Ragsy, her faithful confidante, scream_some day soon. If anybody ever offers me a smitch of fudge again 1 shall burst into eighteen tears and seventeen loud ringing curses.” Her bronze curls were pinned safely beneath a big kitcher towel, her frock was hidden by a chocolate- splashed big apron. sinall feet swing- ing from the tall stool. She banged the exgbeater viciously. Most days at this hectic_time. her buoyant lodger, young Prof. Sheldon would arrive to cheer her with his endless nonsense and lighten her task by valiantly beating the last sticky bowlfuls. But this particular day she knew that he was scheduled to preside at mid-semester examina- tions. She smiled wanly as she re- membered his parting injunction. “Don’t forget union hours stop at 5. ‘Ole John' (his inevitable desig- nation of her youthful husband) will get sore as a pup at me if he comes home at night and finds his booful butterfly a chocolate grub. Call it a day and doll up at The dolling up and the polite fibs about how much she enjoved her fudge-making were the final touch of martyrdom. What she felt like do- ing, she told Sheldon solemnly, wasn't fit for publication. T'd like to stay messy as I am and crawl in your kennel and howl. Ragsy,” she grumbled. “Being noble is_the tamest thing I ever tackled.” She jumped joyfully at 3 when the she remarked to “l1 shall doorbell rang.” It might be Sheldon, after all. But it was not. Having discussed sewing and visit- ing groups of furniture, let us today turn our attention to the necessity of placing the reading chair in a good location. If vou are fond of reading I am sure you enjoy this article of furniture as much as you do any other in the room, Taken for grant- ed that the chair 'is comfortable, the next thing to consider is where to place it so as to get the most pleas- ure from it. 1f it is desired to isolate it from the rest of the furniture so ds to have an uninterrupted study hour it may be placed in a far corner of the room with a lamp near at hand, but we are talking more of groupings, and so today 1 wish to instruct you as to placing of an easy chair. In the sketch you will see that it is near the win- dow with the light falling over its left side, but its relation to the win- dow seat gives it the opportunity of giving double use for the reading and visiting hour. In your general living room it may not be possible to isolate a certain article for any one purpose. There- fore, an easy chair should be placed 20 as to offer all comfort to the book lover and yet be in convenient reach when general conversation is taking place. As 1 mentioned in the first of these articles on groupings, it is not a comfortable room where heavy furniture must be dragged around ch time visiting is to b done. angry Mother Deer. { Wyoming ave. __ 148 _Rhode Island ave. _Frank. 30. Before uncorking the us briefly, but succinctly recapitulate: (1) Ingrowing nail Is caused by wear- ing narrow or pointed shoes or shoes of any shape or size that flare out too far from the Dylural straight Inside aale line. Nonmul feet should toe peratght ahead. (2) There is no such cendition as ingrowing nail. Ordi- narfly 1 ueny @n entity before enter- ing upon a discussion of the cause, evention or treatment thereof, but Prthis instance 1 have to be a little more circumspect because nearly any one can see an ingrowing nail’ if he has one. In spite of that there is no such thing. The nail never grows in; the flesh, irritated and angered beyond the endurance of mortal flesh, grows up under and over the edge of the nail. Anybody with an ingrowing nail should be ashamed of himself for two good reasons: first because it comes from ignorance and vanity in the se- lection of shoes, and second because it s less painful and less expensive to cure than it is to endure, so who- ever suffers from such an annoyance is inexcusably inefficient. ‘Under home treatment or self treat ment, I appeal to the Intelligence o the victim by urging the importance of adopting shoes. built to fit feet. About the only relief consists in the careful application of adhesive plas- ter strips in such manner as to draw the senstitive, inflamed flesh (proud as doctors call it, exuberanr® ons) away from the edge of the nail. This must be freshly applied each day. The skin must be clean, dry, free from any oil. The plaster must be handled—or rathen 2ot handled—with care, for a touch of the fingers e adhesive surface lessens its ad- hesiveness. strip, perhaps one- halt inch wide or a little les: fixed in at the e nall, and then drawn around inside snd under the toe and attached in a spiral fashion. Of coutse the slight traction this makes on the skin and flesh is of no value ifghe same ol shoes are worn that originally crowd- ed and pressed the protesting flesh agsinst the edge of the nail. When the strip has been applied, sprinkle in the groove or upon the “proud flesh” some powdered alum.
